  • what programme should i go for signlab or vinylmasterpro?

Posted by Alistair Richards on September 5, 2006 at 8:47 pm

Ok, so this is probably gonna open a whole host of opinions, but I want to upgrade from my crappy SignBlazer software I started with, and get a new package. Being a UKSG member, I can get a discounted price on either of the above mentioned, so which is best. I know a lot of folk on here use Sign Lab, so I’m tempted by this, and have also tried the demo and it seems good. Also, what about Vinyl Master Pro???

    Signlab

Alistair…. you should’ve run a poll on this one1 😀 I’ve had a play with Flexi, Vinyl Master Pro, Omega but i prefer signlab.
BTW …. why do you look 10 years younger in that new avatar? 😉

Most people use Signlab in the UK because it’s British, cheaper and simply has more marketing.

As a software package it is way behind Flexi in my opinion. I find it clunky and with a poor interface. Not sure about the latest versions but the last version I tried you couldn’t even have more than one document open. Utterly ridiculous.

    Mmmmm …… it’s Canadian and it’s expensive. 😉
AND…. Signlab 7 can open as many windows as you wish. Must have been an older version you looked at. 😀

I’ve been using various versions of Signlab for many years. From an ancient 2.something, 4.95, 5.7, e6 and now 7.0. Not much difference between the last two. I find it to be very fast, accurate & easy to use….I also find Photoshop easy…..but anything become easy with years of use & practice.

I looked at Flexi a while back, it has some features that are appeared better than Signlab but it just didn’t ‘feel’ right. Much the same way that I hated Signlab when i first used it as I’d been using pure CAD programs before that.

I’d personally say stick with Signlab – it’s quite intuitive these days and easy to navigate & figure out the difference functions.

As has been said-it totally depends on what you are used to. The new features of Signlab are brilliant, and make life so much easier for designing, and even cutting.

I also had a play with a couple of demo versions of other makes, but found them hard to use.

I’d say Signlab, but I’m biased.

    I have Signlab – Easysign – Corel X3
For me Signlab, but I couldn’t do without X3. I have never used Flexi but I suspect I would find things it did better than Signlab and vice versa. You have a slight advantage in as much you have used neither so have no pr-concieved ideas or bias, I’m sure both will give you demo copies to try. Would definitely have X3 as well though.
Just a note but Rod from Cadlink does come on here to help with SL questions and Cadlink here in the UK are easy to reach, never seen a Flexi representative here, not sure what the support is like, it could be important if starting from scratch.

Well thanks for all the opinions, might try and see if Flexi can send me a demo of some sort. :lol1:

Thanks Marcella, must be that pot of anti ageing cream I fell into the other day….That old avatar was pretty crappy though. 😀

I have SignLab 5 which I use for cutting vinyl and I also use Flexi 7.5 pro for riping and printing large format digiprint. Tried signlab 6 and 7, dint like it as its got a very messy user interface now, they ruined a good thing by tring to make signlab 5 with colourful icons..

Out of the two, the one I prefer for cutting is SignLab 5, its excellent for that, but for printing I must go with FlexiSign 7 (or the early version of TROOP), as I said before I just think SignLab 6 and 7 are just to messy now… its a cam appliction.. not a games board…

i cant coment fair here as i have never used flexisign but it does have glowing reports.
ive been using signlab for many years now… our company have 5 signlab packages but none higher than signlab 5 rev12. this is out of choice really… we have a few of us using signlab everyday and are used to the old 4.95 layout. so havent upgraded. that said, andrew has tried signlab 7 and really liked it. (i think brian hays sent him a demo disk) andrew uses corel allot so i think thats why he doesnt mind the change in layout etc as much as i and others do.

ive always called it "the sign makers pencil case". signlab does everything i need it too and more…

Brought up and weaned on Advantage/Omega and had a chance to try out Signlab and Flexi Sign last year.

Found that Flexi opens clients files that other sign packages just don’t do,!

Ended up sticking with Omega but still have Flexi for back-up opening the odd awkward file.
