  • What paint to use for Vinyl mask onto rough cast wall?

Posted by Martin Manley on May 28, 2018 at 1:07 pm

    Hi everyone,
Customer wants disclaimer notices painted onto his exterior walls (won’t have panels). I’ve painted rectangles and ordered vinyl masking film and now need advice on best paint to use. Wall is fairly rough cast and has a porous render – any help gratefully accepted… 😎

    Regards

    Martin

hard one without seeing first hand, but on a rough wall, ide just use a masonry paint.

if stencilling on, you are going to have an issue with the vinyl sticking properly if it is rough, your next problem is because it is rough, the paint will bleed inside/under the vinyl stencil.
if this is the case, it maybe best using a "short hair" 100mm roller with very little paint on it and apply. building the paint density up in layers. any bits that are too rough, just dab them in with a brush.
i would do the first one as a test though, and when done remove the stencil and see how it looks.
between coats, you could also glaze over it with a heat gun to speed up coats drying time.

on a side note, the customer isnt always right. :smiles:
you need to make him aware of the issues that will arise from him not wanting a panel and the extra time this will take you. so make sure you charge him correct.

Agree with Rob, we did some stencils on a lime washed wall, and it bled under the stencil. Dabbing the paint with a sponge worked for us.

Unless it is perfectly smooth you’re likely to encounter problems.

    Thanks guys,
I was thinking more of a one coat gloss so I only had to do it once, but I’m seriously thinking of telling the customer it can’t be done on such a wall anyway…

To prevent seepage under the mask, paint a first coat with a clear
Then paint the colour you want on top of the clear.
This will seal the mask against further ingress of paint, and any clear that gets under the mask will not really be very visible later.
I would use a quality external acrylic paint for this job.

Here’s one we done in our workshop recently. Used a heat gun to press it as tight to the wall as possible. Painted using emulsion with a brush. Quite fuzzy round the edges but as good as I’d say you’d get on that type of wall
