  • what machine should i buy a Graphtec or Suma please?

Posted by Mark Bache on August 9, 2005 at 2:19 pm

I am interested to know which cutter would be the best to buy.

The Graphtec CE3000 or the Summa D60

    Any help would be grateful.

    Thanks
    Mark

I can’t comment on the Summa as I have never used one. However, I do have a Graphtec CE3000 and I am very happy with it.

Do some searching of old threads because this exact comparison has been covered in great depth before, many times.

Keep in mind warranty periods and after sales service in general. Expect 2 or 3 years on site warranty if buying new. It’s important. Paying for an engineer to call after your warranty has expired is a very expensive hobby.

I use the Summa D60 after looking into the 24″ cutters supplied by all the known brands. So far it has been faultless churning out metre after metre of vinyl.

As with all of the major brands, there are loads of adjustments that can be made such as knife pressure and speed (these being the two you’ll probably use the most).

The cut is very accurate due the the servo motor (some lesser brands utilise a “stepping motor” which in theory can miss a step, yet the cutter still thinks the blade is in the right place! Whichever brand you use, make sure it has a servo motor system as they are far more accurate.

    Hope this helps 🙂

I have a Graphtec FC 3100 – 60 and a Summa Sign Pro T750 with opus both are excellent machines. My next machine will probably be a ……Graphtec

Another Vote for the Summa, I have used a couple of different cutters over the years ( not graphtec ) I cannot sometimes believe how accurate the machine – within a couple of mm over a length of 6 or 7 meters. Also came with a 3 years on site warranty

Think you will be happy with either, they are both good machines.

Graphtec have reduced their prices recently though so you will probably get a better deal on one of those.

graphtec for me too… i have a 54inch one just now and a roland 48inch one… which i plan to replace with another graphtec shortly.
graphtec are also official suppliers to the UKSG.

all this said, i think summa have equally as good a machine on reaading reports and reviews here on the site and elsewhere. though i think graphtec pip them at the post these days on price, certainly do hands down for UKSG members.

I have always used Summa, the flange roller system is really good, and never had any problems with our machines, the last one we bought was a D60 and has worked every day (almost) for over three years without a single problem. I think though either of these machines will give you great service.

The Graphtec comes with it as standard now, not sure about the Summa though.

I have a Graphtec at home and a Roland at work. I like the Graphtec better, but of course it is 5 years newer. 😀

Thanks guys for all your opinions. It was interesting reading. I will probably go for the Graphtec CE3000.

Just out of curiosity, what is the CE3000 like at cutting small text and logos as I do quite a few.

    Thanks for all your help.

The Graphtec CE300 60 is now £995 and that includes the optical eye and the stand. That’s about half what it used to cost with the extras. Got to be a bargain at that price.

😀 this is a good thread as it asked the very question I wanted.
I think I am heading Graphtecs way. Do I go straight to Graphtec or can I get a deal elsewhere?

    Hi all

Just taken delivery of my new Graphtec 3000-60. 😛 Very excited – my first cutter.

Just wanted to say thanks to all for all your posts that helped reassure a newbie to the trade on which cutter to buy.

Now all I have to do is learn how to install it and get it cutting!

    Wish me luck.

    Can anyone help.

My summa d60 has failed. Its just over 3 years old and hasn’t done that much work It displays ‘Ram error 0000’ on power up.

Summa’s website support email address has just bounced back to me. Their 0800 sales number on the website doesn’t work either.

Firms that I have rung to assist have not rung back!

    Considering Roland CAMM-1 GX-24.

Any advice would be most welcome.

I tried that number again and it worked.

    Thanks for that.

They have given me Art Systems phone number. (That was the firm that didn’t return my calls but I’ll try them again as it looks like I have no alternative)!

got the summa D60 a year ago, 3yr warranty, cost about £1410+vat, though i didnt pay the vat, i’ve never had a prob with it,

only thing i can think to mention though…. i do like to get my rolls cut at 630 (1/2 of a 1260 which most makers sell now) as they never skew outta the rollers, i dont think that is the machines fault, more cos the roll was perhaps not cut 100% right, at 610 the rollers are right on the edges of the vinyl, vinyl corp, who supply most of my vinyl, happily cut a 1260 clean in half for me, much easier to use !
