  • What is your opinion on signing your work?

    Hi
Does anyone here sign their work?
I have recently noticed some signwriter’s logos and phone numbers appearing in the bottom right hand corner of some of the signs around my town – there are four other sign companies here.
Personally I am a little bit against the practice, because I feel the customer has paid for that space to advertise himself, and it is a bit of an intrusion.
But I am probably missing out on a lot of business by not doing so.
What do you all think about this?

    Simon.

    50/50 here…

I only put my logo & email onto vans / cars, somewhere small, not to big.

Signs – nope, tried it once and think like you it is a bit of an intrusion.

I don’t see the problem to put your sign … if both you and customer make agreement. Always signmaker can give to the customer discount because of this.

I’ve never done it as a rule for pretty much the same reasons as you say. However I have been invited more times than I recall to sign it or ‘put a sticker on it’. I’ve also had more folk than I could count ask me why I don’t do it, so I think it’s generally expected. Most other industries mark their work and in more than one occasion I’ve found it useful in sourcing a product. In the motor industry there’s not a car goes out of a car sales garage without the ubiquitous sticker on the rear window or the printed tax disk holder and number plates.

I think a sticker printed on a clear background might be the most useful – perhaps one using dark detail and another using light detail would cover most situations.

I still don’t do it but I’m thinking about changing my mind as public perception and acceptance towards brand labelling seem to be changing too. 😉

I never tag my work i would rather people go and ask "who did that for you?"

we rarely put stuff on our customers signs, however, if there is space on an edge or on the back, we’ll stick a small unobtrusive sticker. mostly because when someone else moves onto the property or has to replace a facia/whatever, they can see our name just in case they haven’t got someone already lined up to replace it.

I have some small printed stickers, originally I made them to fit into the gap of the roll up banners I supply, but stick them onto the hems of my banners, I could put them on vehicles, or in a discreet location of signs, ie the bottom of a sign tray, not on the face.

With it being a sticker the customer can remove it if they wish, and I only use them on the kind of jobs I’d like more of.

    I simply put

"Proudly supplied by" My logo and my phone number.

I always put a small sticker on every van we do. It’s a missed opportunity not to. If questioned I justify it by saying it’s a usefull means of identifying who did the livery. When a vehicle goes in for repair the bodyshop know who to contact to get a set of replacment graphics. I don’t do it on signs such as shop fronts and industrial units though.

I’ll put a small sticker on vehicles (when I remember) and on the back of signs where it’s not going to be seen unless someone is looking for it.

Like Phill said it’s a good point of contact in case of damage.

    me too!

some jobs I’m proud to put my name to, others i’m happy to put my name on, then there are those that are totally down to the customers input, usually I’ve suddenly run out of decals when they suggest putting my name on it!

I put a small sticker on most jobs and all but a few customers don’t mind.
Back in the painting days I used to sign shopfronts, boards etc but rarely vehicles.
Also back then there weren’t as many guys sign writing so you got to know a guys particular style and could pretty much say who did the work.

I put a 50mm X 30mm domed label on every van, not only advertising for me but should the van need a repair the coachworks know who did the stickers.

When you buy a car the manufacturer has his name on it. Then the supplier puts his name on it in the rear windscreen. I do it all the time. I have a set of different sized stickers for run of the mill jobs. Then I have domed stickers for the really nice jobs like expensive notice boards etc. Looks very professional.
I have only ever had one customer complain in 36 years. (chat.)
If the customer doesn’t like it all he has to do is peel it off, no big deal. 🙄

I must also add that the size of the sticker should only be small. I have seen some companies put stickers on you can read from across the road. A definite NO NO!

Here in Namibia it is standard practice to put a little sticker on the lower right hand corner.

I dont do it, simply because I do a lot of work for re-sellers of signs, and it would not be ethical for their clients to have access to my details. Trying to tell the workshop which jobs go direct to the client and which is re-sold by a middleman is going to be a full time job on its own……

Also, if you do it, keep it very small. On a 2460 x 1230mm (8x4ft) sign, no bigger than 40x20mm. There is a competitor in town that puts a 180 x 120mm (VERY badly designed) logo of his company on all his "work" (if you can call his products "work")

Not something I use to do generally speaking, did have labels made up & if the customer suggested it then I was normally happy to put a small sticker on. If it was a job that I was proud to put my name to then I would normally ask if the customer minded me putting a sticker on but I never just did it regardless.

Don’t see a problem with it though, as has been said customer can always take it off if they don’t want it there, just my own personal opinion that stopped me putting them on automatically.

If the job was worthy, we would let the customer know and work it into the design process, otherwise stickers on the back of the sign to let peeps know if it has to be replaced. Personally I think stickers on the front are a bit cheesy, but I’m not running a sign shop in this economy lol.
