  • what is the best way to learn Photoshop?

Having just taken delivery of a Cadet, we want to learn how to use Photoshop to use in our designs. Does anyone have personal experience of books, magazines, DVDs etc. Following Nik’s advice we have been buying Digital Photo magazine which has a lot of good stuff in it. Like anything else, I know we will learn from using the software but just wanted to know how else we could education ourselves.

andy’s link is very good, i used to use that a while back… lynda.com is great as it shows you video tutorials. if you are a bit like me… crap at reading instructions, better to be told… lynda.com is worth paying. :lol1:

I learnt to use photoshop with "Classroom in a Book" as well but that was a while ago because it was photoshop 3 then!!!
I found it to be really easy to understand, taught me a lot and was very useful to refer back to just to jog my memory if I hadn’t used certain tools for a while.
I would imagine the upto date version for photoshop cs would be just as good and it also seems to be a lot cheaper now !!! If I remember rightly I payed about £45 for it at the time but I have seen the latest version for about $34.

I started using Photoshop back in version 4.0 (1996ish) we had it on a computer at school and I was hooked since then. I have learned my by just dabbling around when I first started more then anything else. You have to know in your head that by just trying things and trial and error you will not break the software so just play around with as much as you can, remember there is always the undo feature and the history palette. This software was the key influence in the career path I ended up taking, so from first hand experience I must say the next best resource to just learning from my own mistakes were online tutorial websites and eBooks. I went and still do attend college courses on graphic design and don’t find half of them as useful as these sites such as photoworkshop.com & lynda.com (those are jus 2 of many)
