What is the best adhesive to glue acrylic to aluminum?
hi guys,
Does anyone have recommendations on the best adhesive to use to glue acrylic to aluminium?
I have a sign tray with cut out letters and an acrylic panel glued inside so the letters light up white when the LED’s are on, however, the panel over time keeps coming unstuck (due to heat from the sun I should think)
I have made some trays in the same way from Skybond and these have been up for years without any issues, but these new ones which are done in aluminium are giving me grief.
Do you know of any that are proven to work? your help would be appreciated!
I should point out that I did rough up both the aluminium and acrylic surfaces before applying the glue I used but the bond has given up after only 6 months or so.

Hi Leigh, we use OB1 from screwfix. What’s possibly happening is your current glue has no flex in it and when the heat hits things start to expand and contract causing it to fail. This adhesive stays flexible which should cover you for the movement you’re experiencing.

thanks for your help, my guess to the cause of the failure was exactly what you said, just could not think of a way to stop the issue

Big fan of using this for any of our repairs to (supplied) tray inserts that fall out
The biggest issue with bare aluminium is surface cleanliness.

We use a UHB D/S tape from Indasol with primer and silicone around after, works a treat and have been doing it this way for many a year!
