I have very little imagination so I usually use google pic and search the for the relevant image …..in this case joiners logo

I then try and use my knowledge of Corel to adapt the ideas

I think I would call my particular design style as ‘playing’ because I never have an image of what I have in mind….I like to tinker with things until I’m happy

It’s a good question Martin and a toughy to answer.

To create a half descent logo in the first place you need to have a reasonable eye for design,

My answer would be to look around you, magazines, tv, etc there is great design and logos everywhere.

Every thing I see everyday inspires me be it on the back of a bus or a nice shop sign, I love to see designs that I could not have come up with in a million years, which are sometimes so obvious aswell.

I start when given a brief by tapping the name in a plain font and start adapting from there, sometimes you come up with something pretty quick and sometimes I’ll leave it and go back to it later.

Having been into design since the late 70’s I think my creative juices are always flowing 😮

How was that for an answer 😕 clear as mud…

I’m with Martin on this you have to look look look, you can’t expect inspiration to be there on tap. I also keep loads of these types of sites in my favorites and visit them regularly.

well after getting into the clients head, i then have a few ideas floating around in my head, then i have a look around layout books or the net, to get some inspiration, then its on with the loud sounds…and get the signlab loaded and start with layouts…. 😀 you know when you have the correct design..it just looks and feels right, hope that all made sense 😀

i began this post before watching a film and came back and there has been replies but i hadnt finished ity… :lol1:

basically. i agree with what martin has said…

For me it comes down to what they are going to spend. if this is Joe bloggs the plumber i will do a run of the mill job.
If they want a simple logo then fair do, take the initial letters from the company name, take a font, stagger the letters and overlap… create a pin-line circle around it and one logo in minutes… cheap and cheerful… but only because that’s what they plan on spending.

logos and designs can be much more in depth. some customers tie your hands from the kick-off… oh you MUST use this font, these colours, and want to include a spanner, a hammer etc again, based on budget give them what they pay for… there is only so much you can do for a customer like this.

if you have a good client, hands aren’t tied and they will pay for your time then great…
obviously depends on the type of image you are trying to create, but consider…

doing a bit of research on the company background.
get some inspiration from the web, magazines, tv even… as has mentioned already.
my day to day life involves gather inspiration. not necessarily from logos, but signs in general, vehicle graphics etc how signs have been created and what i could do to replicate or even better it!
back to logos… sometimes i will open signlab and basically have a mess around on screen. changing bits here and there. trying anything and everything until i come up with something i am happy with..
i often find that a blank bit of paper, a pencil and rubber is a great way to come up with some general idea for me to begin working with on my computer. back to basics i guess!

i know i have been very general in this reply but it will ultimately come down to the individuals ability.

    hope this helps…. 😀

I love viewing the designs posted on this forum and often wonder where the inspiration comes from.

Some interesting tips here, keep ’em coming.

    Cheers

    It all depends.
Money is a huge factor, but whether it’s a plumber’s logo or anything else, I do try to do something less than run-of-the mill.
Sometimes I get fired up by the customer’s positive attitude and that makes an idea just pop into my head.
I tend to get ideas immediately, sometimes several at once.
I will verbally feel the client out as to what type of image they are seeking.
Sometimes I will have what I feel is the world’s best idea, only to get it shot down by the client because they simply do not like it.
    Then it gets tough.
Sometimes clients force us to fit into their way of thinking, after all, they are paying us. But I like it when a client trusts me and puts their business into my hands so that I might give them a lasting image to brand their company.
When I get in a rut, I will look at the portfolio section of Letterhead Fonts, or Dan Antonelli’s website. I also love to look at Arthur Vanson’s site.
Sometimes just looking at font sites gives me ideas. Or other signfolks’ sites.

    Thanks for the reply Jill.

If I was to go to a graphic designer I’d have to give them an open ticket to create what they want coz I don’t really know what I want – that must sound strange to someone with a creative ability!

Our main embroidery work is turning logos into embroidery patterns and producing the finished article whether it be a polo shirt, rugby shirt, hat or fleece jacket.

Our main market has been the automotive market, car & bike enthusiast clubs etc. More recently we’ve started doing school uniforms and business logos too.

Some of our more recent creations can be seen HERE

We enjoy creating the patterns but it’s not exactly creative as they’re produced from existing artwork.

    Cheers

    John
