I don’t have any ideas but I can tell you that import duty varies from nothing upwards. It all depends on the type of goods involved and where it is coming from. For instance, I brought in a container of motorcycles from the United States earlier this year and had to pay 6% duty, but if the same bikes had come from somewhere in the EU then it would have been 0%. There is a list somewhere on the Customs and Excise site, together with downloadable forms although I would seriously suggest that you let an import agent deal with that side of things.

You will also have to pay 17.5% VAT, although that is reclaimable in the normal course of things.

Getting fed up with signs? 😀

good subject… ide be interested to see the replies…

(I’m guessing) because of how high ranked this site is with search engines and the traffic it gets. i get at least 1 person per day contacting me via the “contact us form” from china, japan and the like… i know these are not the random ones we get from hotmail and that sorta thing because they elaborate on the site, what they want from me and what they can offer. ill be honest, I’ve thought about it, but i have so much on my plate Ive just turned a blind eye to it these days, ignore them basically.
this would involve importing goods from these countries… such as pop-up stands, banner stands, media, inks… you name it Ive been offered it. the best part of it is, the cost of the individual items and the markup that can be made is substantial. 😕 its teasing emails like this that make me wonder….

hence why i would be interested to see what others think?

yeah, we get lots of emails like that in the main business email account…

Import duty as John says isn’t a killer… it can be fairly reasonable… just they normally want massive bulk orders.

One said category I looked into was LED’s, however needed to import many of them. The prices are very cheap in my view for such a simple device.

hi dave, same here mate… led’s is another. even though you have to buy in a fair number of these, outlay was only something like £5000 for that you take your pick from the stock to make up that amount of investment.
my personal lack of knowledge on products like this, the language barrier and possibley being stung as a result of being so knew to the importing game is why i steered clear.
the only thing we have made the moves to buy in was a complete neon plant from the usa. bombard unit, ribbon burners the works. the lot came to about £5300 which was nothing in comparison to £22000 from the uk. this was from a very reliable source, with many years in this game. we pulled out of doing that for other reasons…

My ideal business would be an internet site selling software or music to download. Once the site is set up you don’t have to do any thing. People can visit the site and download the products directly from the site. No need for a shop, warehouse or any staff to run the business it just runs itself. A bit like a vending machine except you never have to fill it up again.

What software would you sell on this site? Music and games are obvious choices – but how about electronic books or magazines. Failling that – how about a porn site :lol1:
