  • what do you think of my first wrap?

Posted by Shaun Harris on September 24, 2009 at 10:43 am

After attending a wrap course at Spandex in Bristol I thought the thing to do to practice would be my own van.

I came across plenty of problems on the way which will help with the pricing and pointing customers in the right direction.

I also learned alot about artwork, materials and different processes.

The keen eyed amongst you will spot some flaws which I will be happy to discuss.

Fitting looks good to me. Good first go.

Design could do with some work. Sometimes less is more especially on the sides of the vehicle. The back you can add more detail for people behind you in traffic.

Design is a bit busy, it bugs me that the hood (bonnet?) is different. I would have liked to see that stone wall curve across it with a Killroy looking over it.
The logo itself is rather lost. Would like to see SIGN a bit bigger on it, too.
But heck I know it’s probably been done before, I’d have a cute mouse on there nibbling cheese with a name like Cheddar, or the logo carved out of a block of cheese.
    Yum!
I couldn’t even attempt to do a wrap fitting so I feel mean critiquing it.
    Love….Jill

    Thanks guys all comments welcome.

I tend to agree from the front it does look busy with the different themes.

My thoughts were to have a theme that would incorporate signs and also catch peoples eye, the original idea was to have a wall all over the van with signs screwed to it, but the brickwork may look like a builder. As we are in a rural area I thought the countryside look would fit in.

I went through the fast and furious style graphics and thought better of it (after all its a 10 year old berlingo) There is a sign company nearbye that has water droplets all over their van and another that has smarties and not wanting to talk out of turn but they are very busy, but I would say they do make you look.

I thought about having the wall continuing over the bonnet but getting it to line up may have been an issue and also a flat wall didn’t look correct. The idea behind the bonnet was to attract the younger customer who may want their bonnet wrapped

The wrapping looks good to me. Not sure about the design though.
    What about the grill mate?
I think the bonnet could have been a bit brighter as it doesn’t fit in with the rest of the van.
    First attempt?…….10 out of 10.

I Like the wall, the grass and the sky as a backdrop but Don’t like the sign board idea. You’ve wasted so much available space. That word Sign must be 2" tall when it could have been 12". Sorry to be critical but thats why you posted yes ?. That word signs needs to be the prominant word on the van.
What makes me laugh is when someone comes in for a sign and they are obviously new to business and they want their name Amanda Jane in massive letters with the word Hairdresser in tiny letters underneath. I Always say "No one gives a monkeys about your name they want to be grabbed by what you do". I Know this is not like that but by making the signs so big you waste the space for the letters. I like Jills cheese idea as a background though….or would that be too obvious and tacky.
Well done on the wrap though it looks good. What vinyl did you use ? . I Have no intention of getting into that now even though we have the equipment for it, it seems people are doing it for nothing now just to keep the printers running.

As for doing the job for nothing mate you’re right. Sorry to hijack. For the next beetle to be done the customer wants all removable body parts removing….i.e the arches…bumpers. He wants the car dismantling then reassembling after it’s wrapped. All this for a grand. So on that note someone else can do it.

i think its very inspiring and a fantastic first go. the only thing which i would say is that small text would be hard to read for moving traffic. if it was big for example the phone number then people could easily take it or note it at there convenience in moving traffic or when your van slowly turns in to a junction but great first go!!! wrapping is great and design not bad!!!!

that’s a great first effort indeed.
Repeating what others said about the text etc, standing still it can be read ok but moving might be harder to make out.. still cracking effort.. well done mate.

Like the concept lots, The bonnet and top side panels are lost though. The Address sign on the doors is fantastic against the stone work. The panel sign you used for the upper panel and rear practically wipes out the information contained on it.

On a side note, how was the Spandex course??

I tend to agree with everything said BUT, in a strange sort of way, I think it is a great head turner. It doesn’t have to be a modern work of art to get the message across. As long as it gets attention, and you stand out in the crowd, you are halfway there. Sure it looks gimmicky, but gimmicks work in most cases. As they say, there is no such thing as bad advertising, as long as they spell your name right! 🙂

The bonnet does let the whole scheme down though, change that and it should look ‘different’.

If you toyed with bringing that sign panel on the side of the van from behind the stone wall to the front of the stone wall maybe all the info could have been bigger by making the sign board bigger?

Like Shane said the concept is good.

Very eye catching, would certainly grab my attention! Looks like the course certainly paid off, great job to my new eyes- going to take a look at the course myself.

    Hi everyone

Thank you all for the comments. for some reason I’ve not been getting emails to say that postings have been made and thought that my efforts have gone unnoticed.

To answer some of the comments.
The vinyl is the image perfect version of the avery easy apply with the matching laminate. However, (this will upset vinyl purists) we ran out so the cills were printed on calendered oracle vinyl and wet laminated with metamark laminate and to be honest that was the easiest to apply and by far the cheapest, it will be interesting to see how it lasts.

The wrap course at spandex was very good with plenty of hands on experience and also cheaper than many of the others, plus as I live in Bristol it’s on the doorstep.

Now that i’ve done it and had chance to stand back I have spotted many of the design flaws. I’ve already looked at how to make the name on the side larger, I can see that the details are fine on the back where someone following can read it bu almost pointless if they are taking up space on the side where the name should be larger. Does anyone think that doing that with cut vinyl over the top of the wrap will look ok or terrible

I did originally continue the bonnet design over the grill but as the grill slats are quite deep I struggle to cover all of the white and it looked terrible, when I re-do the bonnet I will print some extra to cover the recess’s in the grill.

Robert, just out of interest where did you see signs for CP signs in cheddar? I do know of them through BMX (not me my son) they are based in Bridgewater and I’m not sure if they are members.

hope that covers some remarks, like I said all comments are constructive.
