  • what do people do with 1 meter offcuts of vinyl??

    Hi all,

I have a 2 part question with regards to storage and vinyl which i was hoping to get some help with.

what do people do with 1 meter offcuts of vinyl?? Generally Its a good idea to keep for little jobs but when theres too much build up of offcuts you get storage problems and I hate throwing vinyl away!

Also I have had people in the past who have given me a deposit but then leave the print/cut vinyl to be installed a few weeks to severall months later (one case where it was over 12 months and he paid me 500 deposit in advance!!!) this can be a problem because vinyl can get dammaged or cause storage problems so how do i prevent this???

    😕

    Thanx in advance!

1: Give to Schools, they love it!

2: Expired Vinyl because they not used it soon enough…. shame really.

Same as Dave, schools, play groups that sort of place is a good place to get rid of off cuts rather than just dump them.

As for the second part of the question, I don’t cut anything until the vehicle is booked in so I don’t have a problem with graphics lying about and possibly getting damaged. Can’t think why anyone would pay a deposit and then wait months for an installation to be honest. Most of my customers use to want the job done as quick as possible and moan if they had to wait a week or two.

make signs with the stuff, thats why you buy it. 😀

    Stock Health & Safety Signs
    Stock For Sale Signs
    Stock boy racer type stickers
    Household signs
    Funny Signs

there will be a time when you or staff are stood doing zilch, open a clipart disk and start making No Smoking Signs… anything.

sit them in your reception and sell them…
    sell them online…

    Do wot Robert says.

I must add, I waste much less by buying full rolls only. Then you only have to deal with a reel-end after every 50 odd metres used, not after eg every 5 or 10 m if you buy part rolls.

Same goes for open space next to cuts / prints. PPE signs, funny stickers, even promotional stuff like licence disc holders & rulers for myself.

Same as Rob, I keep off cuts and roll ends as long as I feel they’ll be useful. When I have too much I’ll give a load to the kids schools. Thick tubes go in cardboard recycling, lighter thin walled tubes get chopped up and used for posting decals. as does the wax paper / card boxes that often accompany part rolls, backing paper too!

So nice to see lots of you do what we do….

If the offcut is big enough I have a ready made eps file that I use with loads of small shapes on like, traingles, squares, cat outlines, farm silhouettes, anything really even letters. I cut it and weed it and send it in to my daughters pre-school ( wife on committee ) for them to use, they can’t get enough.

If it’s too small to run through the plotter I just give it to them whole..

What do I get out of it? A wall full of wonderful thank you notes from the kids at the school with my own stickers on lol, worth it’s weight in gold!

    BUT!
I always keep a few 20-30mm x 2-300mm strips of everything with the product codes and supplier written on in an off cut drawer. This I use for cutting small pieces off and sticking them to artwork proofs as a sample of what will be used for the job…..

AND! lol ….. I always have a dozen or so 10mm x 50mm strips in the box I use for my sharps on the bench… they make great handy plasters when I stab myself with the scalpel doing a job. A quick fix and not a substitute for proper plasters, but handy for stopping blood getting on to the products!

and sometimes I bring the special stuff like chrome and the holographic bits I have left over back home with me to make stuff with my daughters who are 4 and 2…. it’s the high-lite of their day sometimes, sticking stuff with dad! 😀

Oh and the Roll Tubes, if you have enough of them, they make great log cabins for dolls and toys or rockets, small chairs for teddies, lots of them stuck together in a long line make a great chute or tunnel for hot wheels and match box cars.

I use the boxes that the vinyl comes in from the suppliers to send out rolled up banners in amongst other things. The wax paper is good for separating decals when you post as hugh says, and putting between batches of safety signs for posting or storage.

I could go on, but I try and recycle just about everything I can, there is very little that goes to waste in the workshop. Even the smallest bits of magnetics get coloured vinyl stuck on them and then cut into shapes for the kids to make pictures on the fridge with!
