Just out of interest what do other folk pay for their ink carts.

    220ml & 440ml

and where do you get them from.

It would be good to know if we are all paying the same price.

I bought the re-fillable cartridges from Granthams (01772 250207) and they are great. I now buy my ink from them in 1 litre bottles at the cost of £150. This has saved me a great deal of money on the cartridge prices (equates to £290 per litre in cartridge form).
The initial cost of changing over was in the region of £770 but this included 4 litres of ink.

i “think” rod may have got them from printmax as we bought them in 10’s too for that price. very good deal considering normal costs. not sure if that is an ongoing deal though becky, but i could be wrong.

bulk buying is better prices… also I suspect the owners/companies are now monitoring this thread as I know someone reading this thread is going to say “damn, they are getting ink cheaper then me” or “damn, UKSB is going to set the new rate”. If more and more suppliers are going to offer discounts here for UKSG’s, I hope ink and medias are will be discounted in someway 😮

Using the standard Cadet profiles. It is exactly the same ink but in bulk format. Had no problems with it whatsoever and it is half the price of cartridges. You just have to keep an eye on the ink levels as the machine does no longer tell you you are running out. (The new cartridges are transparent)

sounds like the way to go.
I`ve just been charged £12.50 for postage on 1 cart……….

The Cartidge system is a very air-tight system, however bulk-ink systems you have too keep an eye out for air-pockets and so forth, also there is a small chance of dirt getting in. So you are more likely to replace dampers and heads with bulk then cartridge. However the costs maybe favourable but in my calculations a few months back, I found it cheaper to use cartridges as our machines are not running 24hours a day. On mimaki waranties they refused Bulk Ink systems so bit awkward.

surely bulk and refillable carts are 2 different things?

yes I suspect you could say that becky, but you are the one transfering the ink so do you need to put a white suit on and go into a non-continmated room…. ok.. a bit over the top that statement but the mimaki firmware gets updated from time to time to stop the 3rd party ink market from using 3rd party ink. However, I don’t know how Uniform products are marketed as, I don’t know if they support 3rd party ink or methods of refill. But if you use your printer about 3 times a week and dont print too much then the original price for ink should be fine, peice of mind type of thoughts and our ink is dated and have to use it by a certain time!

I am actually a subscriber of the American Mimaki user groups and bulk ink is major business over there and printing must dead cheap as a result of that, but time after time you hear the engineers being paid for fixing the machines and buying parts directly from engineers is big business. All bulk ink systems out there, air, dampers and bulk ink filters are common problems.

I changed over to the bulk system some time ago and I have also a maintenance contract with B&P. Installation requires you to remove the used cartridge and replace with a refillable one. It ain’t rocket science. 😕

I think you should ask them why??

what cost was the system and from which supplier?

I had a call from vinyl logistics a little while back. they’ve started doing a refillable ink system for Cadets.

Can’t remember exactly how much it was but it did work out quite a bit cheaper than normal. Think it was slightly more expensive for the first set of cartridges (than a normal set of cartridges) but then you only had to buy refills by the litre.

It did work out quite a bit cheaper but I was a bit scared to try it without any feedback from people that had already tried it.

Has anyone tried it? How does it compare?

    thanks

well, I think B&P system where they run their own ink trials and so forth maybe the winner here as they own quite a large team and can therefore offer their own warrantys on their printers… however as a Mimaki owner it is a diffifcult cost balance.

Ink and systems are cheaper, no issues there and hope that the inks do last the 2,3,4 years UV protection (if any, if mentioned?) without lamination. But when it comes down to deflecting heads, ink starvation, bad mix of inks or even air in the system, you then need assistance. However, we ring our mimaki dealers up, ask us which ink and they will tell us that we are not covered. Oh dear, how much are the heads… almost £1K+fitting each! So, if you are a regular user of a printer, you will no doubt replace one head every 1-2years due to deflection or head strikes etc… so our cost saving is minimal really on 3rd party ink.

The B&P Uniforms and if they agree to 3rd party ink or supply it with waranty on heads, well that is then a very good deal.

    Becky,

check third reply to this post for costings and supplier. Granthams supplied the system and supplies the inks which then come direct from B&P. It’s exactly the same ink used in the cartridges (Activa Sol). When you get through to Granthams, ask for Sue or Kirsty.
