  • what combination of brass letters work on this background?

Posted by Warren Beard on August 14, 2008 at 10:42 am

    Hi All

A customer wants a new sign for the entrance to a nursing home, he wants something upmarket though and has asked for brass letters. The wall is rendered and cream in colour.

My question is what combination of brass letters will work on to this background as I have not done one before and can’t remember seeing any for inspiration.

My thoughts were a Matt black dibond panel on brass standoffs with the brass letters (perhaps 3mm thickness) attached direct to the face of the dibond?

opinion and suggestions would be great please 😉

what do you do if a customer asks to see something similar and you have not done anything like it before (I have searched through the boards to try find a picture I could use but no luck 😉 ofcourse I would tell the customer if was not one of mine 😕 )

    all help appreciated

    Thanks

    Warren

…brass letters…start off shiny & golden – very quickly turn to a mucky brown colour with special fingerprint motifs acid etched into it!

Brasso is evil…gets over everything else. Laquering them works great for about 3-4 years…then it starts to discolour & mottle.

Have you thought about gold plated stainless (no, seriously) or a gold anodised aluminium?

I’d also be tempted to do a di-bond tray to give it increased rigidity & ‘presence’ with hidden fixings of course!

    Thanks David

I wonder how difficult it would be to keep looking good if they used brasso as it will get in the sides of the letters, I also presume it won’t effect the finish of the Matt dibond 😕

The coated steel options sound like a plan but wouldn’t that look more like gold than brass? 😕

Tray would also be an idea but thought the stand off options might give a nice floating effect instead of a simple raise effect.

Anybody have any other design options for brass letters, anything goes but needs to match the cream wall behind.

    cheers

For a cream wall Id try and get bronze letters for a classy touch, Nice dark contrast to the light wall. Brass is also quite easy to electroplate and there are many metal surface finishers all over the country, in fact one of them is a member on the boards……Adrian Yeo……..

Brass is dead easy to clean, but it must be done regular. If you do not want it going all over the place use a thin cardboard tray behind what you are polishing, lightly work the polish over the surface. Only buff it off once the polish dries. Ive done plenty of brass buttons etc and it works………finish off with a soft toothbrush to remove the white powder residue left in recesses /edges etc..

I don’t want to attach directly to the wall though so was thinking more along the lines of some sort of panel behind the letters fixed to the wall.

sorry I have no idea what electroplating is suppose to do 😳

Thanks Ian, those polished gold letters look really nice, are those stainless steel polished gold?

What colour would look good behind those letters to make them really stand out though 😕

those are polished gold titanium, it lasts a lot better in our climate, doesn’t tarnish, i have seen the gold plated stainless steel one, look just as good when new but in a year the become very dull, bit like gold chrome vinyl .
I have used these for 5 years now and have never had a failure.

For the polished gold i would go for a light to mid grey or light cream / white background. don’t use a dark background as they will absorb the surrounding colours and will only catch your eye at a specific angle of light reflection if you know what i mean. (?) if you want to use a dark background i advise using a brushed effect, far Superior light refraction from the different grains so a lot clearer to view.

    Thanks Ian

I will look in to the prices for both options and go with a lighter colour background, maybe I will use a cream panel in front of the cream wall.

why not just use the rendered fascia that there? use builot up letters on 5mm threaded studs , drill a hole use a small comperssor to blow out the dust and fill hole 2/3rd full with grip fill or the likes, and push letters into the hole, they will never move.

Electroplating uses an electro-chemical reaction to put a layer of metal onto the surface to protect the base metal. Usually a 24 hour process.
