  • what can be done about sharp points on vinyl?

Posted by Kev Dunn on January 19, 2007 at 7:56 pm

    Hi All,

    Got a quick question.

What do you guys do with sharp edges of Vinyl like the sharp points on shadows etc on vehicles.

I’ve noticed that the edges can be lifted up slightly when customer is washing or polishing their van.

When fitting I clean down surface with Panel wipe. Then apply, Remove app. tape then go over with sqeegee making sure not to catch the edges.

The vinyl i use is Oracal 751c.

    What can I do?

    Regards

    Kev

Kev, its only usually a problem with very acute angles, normally I sort this at the design stage, (when producing shadows in signlab the type of corner can be specified, sure its he same in other software)I round. or mitre the edges. If its over looked when applied, I just nick of the point,

That’s an easy one. Don’t have sharp edges. 😀

Don’t put the shadow on as a seperate item. Draw it so that the bottom layer is the shape of the letter plus the shadow. Then apply the real letter on top. Looks neat and no lifting problems.

I hope you understand what I mean, otherwise I am going to have to draw it!! 😀 Let me know.

Sod it. OK, but you’ll have to wait until the morning when I get onto my work computer though. 😀

Leave it ’til morning Phil. Take the rest of the day off. I’m sure you’ve earned it. 😀

I’m like Peter, I always avoid a sharp edge on that sort of thing, even a small diameter rounded tip is better than nothing.

In the old days, I’d dab some clear nail polish on the tip, that always did the trick. Got sick of explaining to my mates why I had nail polish in my work van tho 😳

Most of the time I’ll radius all the points in Signlab if it’s a particularly ‘spiky’ job. Otherwise – just nick the tips off with a scalpel to stop them lifting.

    Kev,

This is the way I do it https://www.uksignboards.com/viewtopic.p … 641#188641

No sharp corners. Fast, fun and fumble free.

    Phil,

You can carry on weeding now! 😀

Sorry mate. I had a bit of a lie in.

I apologise if it’s put your production schedule behind. 😀

Dont worry about it John, it’s the staff who haven’t turned in that are causing the holdups !

A problem we all suffer. I lost three days this week through staff not turning up. That’s part of the reason I’m in the office this morning. 🙁

I’m in the middle of interviewing for new staff. One or two of the existing ones are going to get a wake-up call in the very near future. 🙂

Ah right. It takes you to the File Swapping Forum. I posted it there because I can’t put an image in this one. I’ll see what I can do, even if I have to email it to you.

It’s OK John, I was just curious to see what you had done. I will have to PM Robert as I should have access to all areas being a UKSG member.
