  • What board is best for shopping centre sign?

Posted by Tim Painter on October 15, 2003 at 8:35 am

Can anyone advise me on a suitable board for use in a shopping centre.

The signs are for a Flower stall which is being made from mainly steel to keep the fire officer happy.

The panel sizes for the signs are approx 1m square.
I could fit direct to the stall but the customer would rather i did not so they can change the stall re paint etc more easily if they have to.
    Cost is a consideration.
    I assume fomex is out?
What materials without high costs are likely to keep the fire officer happy?

Im a newbie so would appreciate and advice how ever small. 🙂

    Hi Tim,

From memory, Foamalux (from Brett Martin) is Class 1 fire rated?…

    check out: http://www.brettmartin.com/semifinished/foamalux/fire.shtml

…I would go for 10mm or so thickness.

Alternatively, you could contact Ashby and get an aluminium plate supplied with/without rounded corners, grey to the rear and coloured to the face using vinyl (they apply this if you wish) and deliver it pronto!

don’t have the number to hand – but use the search box above to find other posts about them…

    good luck

    more soon

most foam pvc’s are class 1 fire rated now, and if you are thinking of going down the 10mm route then consider alucolor etc

it would be a far more stable sign material

i know that forex comes with a class 1 fire rating & 5 year warranty (white only)

and foamalux comes with class 1 fire rating

dibond or similar is another option, not as thick as foamex but just as strong and a 2mm thick sheet is around the same price as 5mm foamex.

alucolour, rynabond or dibond…. best alrounder i would say. light, strong, nice finish, easy cut/filed, doesnt soil easy etc etc etc

foamex is fine for something like this indoors but does hold dirt when its being wiped down witha wet cloth, unless the type with a gloss face. foamalux etc

if these signs are low, like along the front of a stall i would use a clear vinyl over the face. this stops the fingers picking off the letters when buying or looking at stuff… 😉
