  • What bank / service do you use to accept C.C. payment?

Posted by JohnMoyles on October 8, 2010 at 3:43 pm

    Hi,
I am a sole trader and run a small sign shop in the west of ireland.
I would like to start accepting credit card payments but the merchant account system and terminal rental through my bank seems very expensive as I am only a small operation and dont expect to take too many C.C. payments.

I have heard about online payment services and iphone apps but would like to know What do other self employed Irish sign makers use?

    any help appreciated.

    John.

you can add the commission percentages to the fee, that’s more or less what most do nowadays.
the machine rental isn’t much… £18 a month – £4.50 per week or something like that?? its not much at all…

i know what you mean, is it worth the cost etc you may only need it once and a while just now, but once you have the sign up saying you can accept payments by card, the more you will see folk starting to pay you there and then.

i know several freinds and family that never had one before and asked me about how i went about it and how i found it… all said same as you,
i.e. "we hardly need it, would just be good to have it in case"
now they will tell you they dont know how they managed before…

$4.50 per week really isnt something you should consider a cost when it can help your cash flow in so many different ways.

theres been a few threads about which are the best but as things change no harm in an update.

We couldnt do without taking cards, have always had one, we have used a few banks but cant fault streamline, easy to set up no hassel good rates.

I too am in Ireland and have been wondering about accepting CC payments.

I run my sign shop from home, so I tend to be out on the road most of the time, but more and more customers are asking if they can pay by CC.

The costs as far as I have found out are about €30 for the machine rental (Mobile Unit) and then the % charged by the financial institution. I am still trying to find out if this cost can be passed on legitimately under Irish Financial regulations.

As things stand though, I think we will all have to take the plunge sooner or later as cheques are becomming few and far between. All my larger and some of the smaller customers pay by electronic bank transfer.

I am still waiting for cheques / cash payment from some customers, even though they should have been paid on completion. CC payment will get rid of a lot of situations like this.

Just my thoughts on the matter.

Havent been here for a while.

The federation of small businesses offer good rates but we use Seymore Direct.

They use their size to get a good rate from the banks.

    Hi Guys,
I’ve been looking up all the companies you mentioned as I had not heard of some of them before. I’ve decided to start out with paypal virtual terminal…. I didnt even know paypal had this service even though I already have an account with them. (Thanks Mo for the info!) I like that its relatively cheap, easy to set up, I dont need to rent any equipment and there is no contract.

Thanks to everyone for your help.

    John.
