Posted by Shane Drew on November 11, 2006 at 12:02 pm

My wifes got her eye on doing her own craft stuff, and has seen an advert here for a robo cutter. Anyone use one, or can tell me whats its like? Strictly for her scrap booking hobby, so would not need to be industrial quality.

Its $800 to buy, so would like to get an idea if its worth the investment before I shell out for one.

    Cheers

    Shane

Got a cheap version (Ferm brand) of this some time ago for around £40 but have found little use for it. I tried decent Bosch made cutters but still found anything thicker than a few mm would cause the cutter to break. Foamex melted behind the cutter making a very poor finish. It is difficult to use hand held without a guide due to it’s lack of weight and overall a half decent router gives a much better finish. The only real job I found for it was cutting out wall sockets in plasterboard. On the other hand my nephew bought the real thing and said his works well but I am not sure how much he has used it.

    Thanks Colin,

The wife is only cutting cardboard and paper for her crafty scrapbooking pages. Nothing too thick at all.

    I appreciate your reply mate…

    Shane,
My wife is also interested in the Craft Robo for scrapbooking and card making, plus I also have an interest in doing some vinyl cutting in the future as little side line. My concern with craft type machines was there durability, and if it was possible to get something sturdier like the Creation CT-630 or some other vinyl cutting machine to do the same sort of things that Craft Robo does. It seems to me that you only need an adhesive backing sheet so that you can attach whatever you need to cut out and feed that into a vinyl cutting machine, the software may be a problem though. My other thoughts were would it be worth upgrading to the Craft Robo Pro CE5000-40. This would do every thing my wife would need but would it be capable of doing all the vinyl cutting that a machine made for this type of work do?
    Looking forward to your comments.

Hi Michael, welcome to UKSB’s. You should post a hello in the hello section, tell everyone a bit about yourself. Where are you from in Oz would be a good start :lol1: Especially with the ashes just about to start. Already given the poms a hiding twice this month, so it makes for a good game 😉

I have not looked into the Robo that deeply actually. Didn’t know they did a pro version until your post.

I don’t actually need anything too commercial as I have enough vinyl cutters and digital print gear here at work to keep me in debt to the banks for a few more years yet. The wife and kids would get a fair bit of use out of it tho, so I may look at the pro version for that reason. Battling to find a stockist close to me, so I can have a look at one though.

I think the software may be the key too. None of my professional sign software does kiss cutting, so I can’t see a simple answer to that frankly.

Look forward to hearing more from you.

    Cheers, and welcome again..

Hi Shane, the craft Robo is a Graphtec machine designed purely for the craft market and would probably be ideal for what your wife wants. I think thay also do a more robust version of it but Im not sure what its called. Ill get Jeff to add a few more specifiaction details for you if you want to know more 😀

    Hi Shane,

Craft robo’s great little cutter, tougher than you would imagine,
easy to use , cuts card ,vinyl, flock, some people cut fine cloth for dolls
clothes, they are a real hit over here for the scrap bookers, card makers,
and crafters, comes with its own software and plug in for Illustrator upto CS2, they also have regi mark sensor so you can print on your desk top printer and then contour cut. The new craft robo is due the end of the month , slightly moe cutting force, usb2 improved software with a trace function, and now I think it will have a plugin for Illustrator Mac aswell as pc. driven by stepper motors tunefull but very reliable. you can cut virtually any font that is installed on your pc, in the uk they are A4 and you can get letter, but they will cut upto 1m in length by a4 width.
a good site that has helpfull forums is ukscrappers.co.uk

    http://www.graphtecgb.co.uk/images/stor … t-robo.pdf

there is a pdf to down load at the link above, I presume they are available in Oz, the robo Pro is a big brother to the robo A3 size and more features, as it says a more proffesional progression.
hope i’m not breaking board rules just helping a friend

    cheers

    Jeff

Thanks Jeff. I really appreciate your time on this. I’ve found a distributor in Victoria, but I can’t get a demo locally at this stage.

I’ll probably buy the wife one with what you say. Just a bit hesitant without actually seeing a result first 😳

    Thanks again.
