    It’s confession time.

Last night I filled my car up with unleaded fuel. Only problem is it’s a diesel 😳

It caused great mirth and shadenfraude around these parts. 😕

Has any one else done this?

I filled my VW Camper to the brim with diesel once but I realised before I started the engine and managed to drain the tank and fill it with un-leaded before any of the diesel got into the fuel lines and carb.

The funny thing was, what little diesel there was left, diluted with un-leaded kind of lubricated the engine and it run a lot smoother for about a week.

My father did on his way from down south on hols to your end of the world.

Amazes me why the nozzles are not diff. sizes & the filler holes sized to suit…

Atleast it was petrol in a diesel….
I guess it was an expensive fill up?

I`d borrowed my Sister`s 7 seater unleaded people carrier thing about 2 and a half – 3 years ago so me and a few mates could go down to Mort`s for a weekend of LAN gaming.

A week after i came back, i filled my Diesel Mitsubishi Shogun to the neck with Unleaded.

My excuse is that i was filling thios 7 seater with is beforehand.

It was 1.15am when i filled it. Luckily i managed to free wheel halfway down Bellshill before juddering to a halt close to a 24 hour commercial vehicle garage who was also a customer.

I got home at 4.40am. £50`s worth of Unleaded down the pan, £50.00 worth of Diesel to fill it back up and the garage took £30.00 for putting it on the ramp and draining the Unleaded out.

I have a routine now that before pulling the trigger, i check the word “Diesel” on my fuel cap matches the word “Diesel” on the nozzle.

Having said that, i just know i`ll do it again one of these days 😉

I once had a light weight ex-army landrover with a 3 litre ford essex engine (petrol) and in a rush one morning going to a 4×4 meeting filled it to the brim with diesel.

only noticed because of how frothy it was.

i did not start the engine, pushed it to the edge of the forecourt and the kind attendant, through a big smirk, give me some drums and i drained the tank.

then had to refill it with the right fuel, expensive day out, no damage done.

    cheers

ide just passed my test at 18 and took out my dads new volvo for a spin. got to glasgow and 1/3 filled it with deisel…. (ide say syphin, sifine, sigh 🙁 but i cant spell it) anyway, realised what i did i tried to suck the bloody stuff out with a plastic tube, 20 mins later as my mate called it a day while watching me vomit about a litre of deisel on the ground next to him… :vomit:
we decided to dillute with petrol and topped it up… all the way home down the motorway, black smoke belching from the exhuast, car shuddering all the way… coughing and spluttering home, we made it! yippee…. told me dad & ill leave the rest to your imagination… 😮

4 weeks later i finally manage to kill the poor thing while taking it half way up a lampost, uprooting the lampost and removing the engine from the mounts. 🙄

called my dad…. yep… leave the rest to your imagination again… 😮

    couldnt walk for a week 😕 😳

    lol @ Rob 😀

Lucky it was a lamp post and not a Fastsigns sign. No Volvo could withstand that impact.

Mc rod thats exactly wot i do since filling a diesel van up with leaded 😳

it was height of the petrol crisis i was so pleased to find a station with an available pump and filled up, my exuse was the leaded pump had a black hose like most diesel lines, now i read the wording as well as look at the hose colours

It doesnt help having two cars one petrol one diesel

Ok, my hands up. Went to France at the end of last year and the ferry back was at 8 in the morning about one and a half hours drive from where we were staying. It was on thew way back to our lodgins that I had the brainwave of filling up to save time in the morning. I stood there and brimmed it only to realise as I looked at the hi octane symbol and thinking we should have a faster journey home that I had never seen high octane diesel !
It was Friday, 5.30pm and the pumps shut and go onto cards only at 6 pm. I explained in my totaly crepe French what I had done to the lady serving at the booth, paid her my 60 Euros and she got the chef out who spoke better English than she. He then called out a mechanic who arrived with vast drum and electric pump and emptied my newly purchased fuel to leave me dry. In the mean time I had pushed the car away from the pumps and gone into the hardware shop next to the garage and bought a container to put more diesel into, 15Euros for the jerry can and 20 ish Euros for the fuel.
The guy rolled up, we muttered to each other, he probably had a chuckle about ze stuupide Engleesh mans and I tried to make light when I paid his invoice for 87€ !
Then I asked if it would be ok with the deisel I had bought and he said to fill it to the top to dilute further any petrol that might still have remained. The only problem was that I had a business debit card and 2 credit cards the wouldn’t operate in the petrol pumps. He knew a French man that had just driven into the garage and he kindly agreed to use his card to fill my car to the brim. I thanked him very very much for his kindness and gave him the cash in €notes and the job was done. Never realised that fuel can be so expensive on the continent! Well over £100 to top up.! 😮
I am a firm believer in not doing things in halfs whenever possible, but will leave this one alone for a long while!!!!! 😳

    Thats terrible news Phill

    Hope you got it sorted

You’ll probably need a diesel fitter

I knew a lady diesel fitter once. She worked in a lingerie department store. She was expert at guessing sizes of customers as they walked in the store. They would just walk in and she would hold up a pair of knickers and say ‘diesel fitter’

    She won everytime pants down

My best one was 100 litres of unleaded in a truck once. Only realised the mistake when the pump stopped at its limit whereas the derv pumps didn’t stop.

Petrol in a diesel, if over approx 15%total fuel vol = bad – if below, make sure its filled to brim with derv before starting. Goes welll for a bit though.

    Over 15% generally means (hot)

Derv in a petrol = cough splutter

I’ haven’t filled the car with diesel, yet 🙄 but I did manage to scold myself with a bit of a daft moment.

Travelling along, I can see steam rising from the bonnet, so I pulled into a petrol station and lifted the bonnet. The radiator expansion tank (as I now know it) was shaking violently and looked like it was about to blow up. Fearing the worst, I decided that to stop this I would ever so slowly unscrew the filler cap, release the pressure, then fill it with cold water. What could go wrong? I was in a garage with a limitless water supply, 2 minutes it would be job done! 😀

That was until I unscrewed the cap, and the cap shot 3ft in the air, followed by a geezer of scolding hot, brown water that drenched me. Luckily, only having used 6 of my 9 lives, I turned away at the right moment and managed to scold my neck and the back of my head. 😳

It didn’t say anything in the manual about not removing the filler cap til the car had cooled down! 😳

    Cheers, Dewi

Strangely Dew, it doesn’t say anything in the manual about not getting in the back seat and having a kip whilst tanking down the motorway.

You see, you let Northern folk loose with mechanical things and they start trying to blow stuff up. Stick with t’ponies.

Funnyiest was when I took it to be steam-cleaned… obviously the small explosion of dirty radiator water caused a small mess under the bonnet. I explained to the guy what had happened and asked if he could clean it up, but he wasn’t really listening (happens alot up ‘ere in the north) so when I lifted the bonnet, he pointed and exclaimed “Whats that!?!?!?” Me being me, I thought he was a local and replied “Um, its the engine!” 🙄 He didn’t laugh so I thought it best to sneak round the corner for a sly ciggy and let him do his job. 😛

Me and cars don’t mix at all though. When I went down to see Nigel, the car sounded terrible, and Nigel was chuckling over how bad the engine sounded. So, I thought I’d nip it over to the garage to get it checked over. On my way, the car suddenly bumped and grinded as I ran over something in the road, I looked in the rear view mirror to see a backbox of an exhaust! 👿 I was fuming and began to rant and rave about the selfish barsteward who would just let the exhaust part drop off without going back to move it from the road. I pull in at the garage, and the mechanic just looked at me in the usual way, ie Tall-Lanky-Stupid-Bloke-Who-Knows-Nothing-About-Cars….. “Do you realise your exhaust is missing?” 😳 😳

    Cheers, Dewi

Well the car’s fixed again. The garage opposite fixed it for me yesterday 😀

Since news of this broke out in the area I can’t get over the amount of concern and sympathy I have received from almost every one around here. Everyone greets me with a nice friendly smile and gives a strange wave which involves forming the fist into a tube shape and shaking it up and down. (?)

Took the TVR in for service yesterday 😮 – courtesy car is Diesel – hope I remember to pick up the correct nozzle, it’s already bad enough between Optimax and regular unleaded 😕

Before starting signs and worked as a recovery guy, you could bet that sometime during the day or night you would be called to someone with incorrect fuel, my boss used to charge £250 to do a fuel drain, I never saw any of it though.

I havent filled up incorrectly before ….. being a woman and all, we don’t make mistakes like that 😉 :lol1: only joking guys!!!

Steve half filled up his diesel car with unleaded, realised what he did and then filled up the with diesel ….. bit of a mix …. it was a bit dodgy to start but then actually ran better than it had before :lol1: just coincidence Im sure???

I have trouble with exhausts and tyres …. the amount of punctures I get 😮 My backbox fell off my car a few years ago …. I heard a loud scraping noise …. scared the life out of me …. pulled over not being sure it was my car …. pulled off again realising yep its me :lol1: I then got out, walked to the rear, spotted my exhaust hanging off, grabbed my belongings, locked up the car and walked home :lol1: I was a new driver, embarrassed and didnt know what to do, so got my dad to go and rescue the car 😳

Well I’ve been doing some internet research and have discovered that filling diesel cars up with unleaded is one of the most common causes of breakdowns these days.

Fortunately, I have come up with a cunningly simple yet brilliant mechanical device that can be fitted to any diesel car to prevent this from happening in future.

All I need to do now is patent my idea, then licence the device to manufacturers across the world. Then I can sit back – give up signmaking and live off the royalties from my patent.

I have decided to spend my middle and twilight years as an amateur archaologist investigating the building of the pyramids in Egypt. (I have a theory that they were originaly made from sand – now I just need to prove it to get the fame and aclaim I rightly deserve :D) 😕
