Website Copyrights ?
Morning All.
We have had a website for quite some time and have invested quite a long time in producing a good looking site and keeping it up to date. We’ve also invested fairly heavily in ‘search engine optimisation’ etc so that we appear high in the list of any web searches.
Whilst doing a random search on Google the other day just to check that we were still appearing high in the rankings I decided to have a general look at other sites to compare what was going on with everyone elses site.
I was quite shocked when clicking on one website as it appears they have ‘stolen’ almost all our wording …. and 95% of it is literally ‘word for word’.
I was just wondering whether this was allowed or are there certain copyright issues on the wording ?
I know it should be considered a form of flattery, but it is a bit ‘cheeky’ .

Sorry – don’t know anything about this or whether discussed previously on UKSignboards, but think there is a lot of discussion on this on the FSB website formum – second page in or so. (you dont need to be FSB to access).

The same thing happened to me a few years ago. I stumbled across another website that was a clone of my own. Word for word except different pictures had been used, contact details, and so on. I emailed the company in question and never heard back from them – but the site was taken off line.
I suspect it was the work of a lazy website "designer". The company involved may not have even realised that what they had paid for was a copy of my site.
I suspect the problem is pretty common seeing as it is so easy to clone a website. 😕

Although it does amount to copyright theft, Google does penalize sites which have duplicate content too so the original authors will generally out rank them.
This site is excellent for seeing just how much exactly they’ve copied word for word
You can then send a DMCA violation letter to their web host who’ll take down the site.

mmmmm! interesting and sorry to slightly go off the original topic – but what happens when your site is promoted on other portals. I just did a search for a site I have and there are as I thought dozens of these sites with our info. This is for a luxury apartment business I have and virtually the same content appears on quite a number of of other sites. I have heard that this can penalize the site or the ‘duplicate’ what happens when this case where it is legitimate? We are also just about to change or websites so we have one site with all our apartments but also each apartment with its own site – this would mean identical text do you know what would happen re this?

Google does penalise duplicate content over different websites – if you’re doing lots of little sites just re-write the wording for each
If someone nicks your content, Google can generally tell who had it first, and you can still file a DMCA complaint with the offenders web host to get it removed
