I think forums like uksignboards are the way forward.

To not only help with “how to do this?” and quotes etc. But to help with problems we get when we are sold the wrong machine for the job, or being railroaded by the larger multi million pound companys that supply us.

By sharing problems we get with suppliers etc, we become larger than the “little chap working from his shed” (not pointing the finger at you mike)

Everyone gets to know how badly that company is treating the indivual. Preasure is instantly put upon the company, by other people knowing whats going on.

A few topics have touched upon “being sold the wrong machine/software for the job”
I myself when visiting the NEC have been told one thing by one supplier and something completley differant by another supplier of the same product.
One of the problems I think, is that the reps are put under so much preasure to sell, that they will tell porkies or exaggerate what the machine can do, just to make that sale.

By bring this into everyone view, other people thinking of buying the same, can change route or ask that all important question”is this the right machine for me?” or even go to another supplier that offers a better back up service.

So big hugs and high 5s all around. If you`ve been mistreated by a supplier, tell everyone on the forum. Let the world know what a bad dealer they are.

But don`t forget to give them praise too, there are still some good guys out there.

now can someone help me get down off this podium. 😳

    No!
Get back up there mate. 😆 😆
forums, chat rooms, email or whatever else brings the communication of our trade, easier & closer together…
I agree 100% & this is just one of the reasons I wanted this site to be created.
Even the smallest of sign making companies can share equal knowledge, buying power etc that only the larger sign companies of today really have.
It makes me very happy that you have felt the site has helped you in some way.. cheers 😉

    My 2 pence worth:

Most of the people working for big multi-nationals are decent, honest, hard-working folk like the rest of us…and none of us are perfect. People make mistakes and — occassionally — you do get the odd bad apple. Life is like that.

I don’t dispute that there is strength in numbers, but if there is a good business lesson to be learned from Kevin’s recent experience of a “rep” making a commitment that he wasn’t in a position to keep (and subsequently “vacating” his position with the company) it is: Get it in writing!

Putting it in writing is equally important! When I was in Sales, I found that customers occassionally heard what they wanted to hear and — as a result — always made a point of following up important conversations in writing in order to avoid any confusion. I quite often follow-up discussions with our vendors in with a “here’s what we discussed” note for the same reasons, today.
