  • Waterproof / Permanent double sided tape for Acrylic

Hi, Can anyone recommend a thin double sided tape for sticking acrylic to acrylic that would be permanent / waterproof. We’ve got a new laser cutter and hope to add 4D number plates to our range. Last thing I need is random letters falling off. I know 3M VHB is super strong but just too thick for the application. A wider roll would also be helpful.

    Thanks

The issue with the tape you use is its mounting a cheap plastic letter on cheap plastic board. the plastic will expand and contract a lot with heat. so a thin tape might not be ideal as it doesn’t allow a lot of movement, so to speak.

That said, you could use Oracal banner hemming tape. its flexible and holds well long term on banners. it’s very thin and strong. not sure if spandex sells this but europoint do!

I see what your saying Robert. Perhaps VHB would be a safer bet long term. Going to have a play about to how they look. Will have a look at the hemming tape also. Thanks

Don’t rule out the hemming tape mate. The oracal stuff is very strong and flexible.

VHB is strong, but for plates, Oracal (again!) white foam stick is really good and would do the job no sweat. It is also a fraction of the price of VHB. However, like the VHB it’s thicker and its “white” so will you see it?

alternatively, why not use tensol adhesive? just apply a thin smear up the backs of the letters and position and leave to dry. takes longer to set, but much faster than cutting up little strips of tape and applying, peeling back the liner etc.

You can also get adhesives that cure very fast, as in seconds.

Just an update if your still looking for the double sided tape.

Many companies are mounting either 3m 467mp on the acrylic prior to cutting for the 4d letters but ive found that 3m 468mp is probably more suited as it has a better bond for acrylic on acrylic.

Cheers folks. Have to get registered now to make plates and stay legal. Had a play about with tape and glue, tape wins hands down, glues to mesy or at least when I’m using it.
