I don’t suppose it was for roller banners was it?

We have had the enquiry twice but after a little research guessed it was dodgy.

We have had this one also he has paid £2600.77 an over payment of around £1000 we are waiting for him to ask for the overpayment back the payment was by cheque in his local branch so has not cleared yet and never will. We received a email yesterday saying they have had a fire in there warehouse and this had delayed the payment lol. We smelt a rat from the start as the spelling in the emails is very poor and you know when you just get a feeling this is not right.

We will be asking for his bank details to refund the over payment then pass them on to the police in the hope they can freeze the account and anyone who has been scamed might get there money back.

It was how quickly he placed the order which got me asking….NOBODY spends that much without some questions…too good to be true…it would have been the quickest grand I made without lifting a finger.

Here also he replied straight away and no mention of artwork either our accounts have just told me his email this morning saying his accounts deptment have made an over payment lol. We have reported it to the bank the cheque has already been declined as the signatures do not match the account holders, strange this is they have credited our account with the money provisionally but it takes 5 working days for a cheque to clear and another 2 working days they can still cancel the cheque so it’s really 7 working days before the money is safe.. Be careful when accepting cheques we normally allow 5 days but now we will make sure it’s 7 days just to be safe.

Thats shocking…I assumed that if the money was in your bank…it had cleared!..I insisted on bacs payment…is that different??

  • Martin Pearson

Yes Cheryl BACS is completely different, by BACS the money is transfered directly from their bank to yours, money has to be in the account for their bank to transfer it.

thanks Martin…thats probably why I didn’t get paid any money in the first place. Glad I asked for that and held fire on the metalwork until I saw readies….

We asked for bacs payment but he paid a cheque into his local branch using our vacs details we sent him on a proforma, the bank told us he done 5 in the same branch in the same day.

I always thought with cheques after 5 days the money was safe but the bank inform us you can draw on the fund but the cheque can still be canceled up to 7working days meaning you then owe the bank money.

I was wondering why he did not purchase from our online shop but he would of had to pay by card..

I believe that some banks don’t show it a cheque paid in on the statement as its not used the creidt slips, and its done over the counter in any bank.

So for some it will look like a bacs payment.

We had a supplier pay our cheque (and a bundle others) into our account by mistake. It didn’t show as a cheque payment just had the branch sortcode as the reference.

Always worth doing some background checks on a new customer.

Because my main product is blinds I am a member of the BBSA (British blinds & shutter association). One of the many benefits I get is free credit checks & company background checks. I’m not sure if this is something available through any of the sign/print associations but perhaps if there is any influential members of those trade bodies who read these threads they could see if it’s feasible to offer such a benefit, maybe Rob could explore the possibilities.
The reasons these scams work is despite the many folk on this thread alone who are too "wide" to get caught out there is folk who for whatever reason fall for it, meaning the fraudsters keep doing it.

Actually, I do remember getting one of those emails. I ignored it though as the poor English made it obvious it was one of those scams you get when selling a car.

Interestingly, we’re currently quoting on 12 banners for "James" that he need to take back to Ghana with him on Wednesday 😕

Our credit checking agents, can’t find anything about him or their company. 🙄

We had the cheque returned to us by the bank the bank account was closed and the signature did not match the account holder. We have not had any more emails.

Seem’s like a legitimate job to my surprise.

Recommended to us by a trade customer of ours, who I’ve rang and have given me a reference.

Substantial deposit paid by debit card, and the materials are on order. 😉

Our apprentice will be busy on Monday :lol1:

@john I’m glad I am not delivering them Ghana. :vomit:

Hope it’s OK, but stolen or cloned cards on rush jobs via phone or email that doesn’t relate to a company and being taken out of the country are a well known scam which they will just reverse the payment for fraud.

I’ve even had hacked email accounts from large companies used in an attempt to place too good to be true.
