A nice relaxing, sunny saturday morning sat down in the garden. Coffee cigarette and paper. And then my mobile phone decides to ring, with the number of my premises coming up on the screen.

“Mr James, this is Police, your premises appear to have been broken into”

I then ran off a long list of expletives, ๐Ÿ˜ก hopped in my van still i the clothes i’d slept in to go and admire the damage. ๐Ÿ˜ก

Arrived expecting to have been cleared out, was a tad worried about how i could possibly replace my plotters and printer. ๐Ÿ˜•

Lo and behold only my PC tower unit had been taken. Would o let em have the flippin thing if only i could of got all the work off the thing which wasn’t backed up ๐Ÿ™
Now have to spend a week waiting for the ‘wonderful’ insurance company to get back to me. Meanwhile working on my archaic home pc, having to ferry it back and forward to access the net, (stupid me for thinking ISDN would be a good choice).

Right must go off to install some heat tracking machine gun nests both inside and outside my premises. It’s gonna look like a Bond villian’s lair by the time i’m fnished, voice recognition, retina scans. All i need now are some henchmen pretending to look busy doing ardious tasks in the backgroud. Muhahahaha

    Marty …..

    Sick pond life aren’t they (:) (:)

    Just a thought …….

when we moved into our little shack in town, losing the HD was one of my big concerns, so being a practical sorta bloke, I removed the side of the case, BOLTED it through my work desk, & replaced the case side.

Not gonna stop the most determined muppet, but the alarm will start when they break the glass, then cut the bars – only to find it bolted to the desk ……… pretty p****d off pond life methinks ๐Ÿ˜€ ๐Ÿ˜€

But it’s still MY Desk Peter ๐Ÿ˜›

for the odd moments when it’s inconveneit (like replacing the mainboard this week), it’s gotta stop the opportunist thief. Most of them would be too stupid to take much else of value because they all think PC’s are worth loadsdosh ๐Ÿ˜€ ๐Ÿ˜€ ๐Ÿ˜€

Whatever …… mines staying bolted for the time being. they can have it IF they want to WORK for it ๐Ÿ˜‰

    Chin up Mate
get the kit replaced ASAP it doesnโ€™t redress the situation but the sooner you can get back to ware you were the quicker you will forget about it If you need any help with prepping layouts or quotes drop us a line and ill try to lend a hand.

    Best wishes

    Neil……

I like the bolted down chasis might try that, any one got any other security tips that could help others. Marty’s situation got me thinking a PC has a much smaller value to us signlab users than a dongle if you tighten up the screws on your printer cable if you print through your dongle but leave the conection to the PC as a push fit if a would be tealeaf lifted your PC chasis they are more likely to leave the dongle on the end of the cable than attached to the PC , even if you dont print through it fit acable and tie it round a table leg.
    Just a thought..

I know exactly how you feel. Happened to us on Sunday. I hope this is a warning for all about security.

We were working at the weekend and two guys went out to measure up leaving one guy in the workshop. Our building creeks a bit and gets hit by golf balls sometimes so strange noises are the norm. However these noises were to regular. He went to investigate. Creeping up the stairs, baseball bat in one hand, machete in the other (only joking but wish he did).

Stood in MY office was a young bloke with backpack. “got any jobs going mate” he said.

WHAT its bloody sunday and only idiots or memebers of the UKSG work weekends. Oh and BURGLARS. “Get out” said our man. And off he went on his merry way.

Monday morning arrives. ยฃ120 cash gone out of safe box (left for early morning cash delivery)

Moral of the story. We have had them before. “Got any jobs going” THEY are casing your joint. They wonder round looking lost and got time to do anything and then use the old “got any jobs going” to through you off. Everyones kit and files are priceless and need protecting. OK only ยฃ120 cash gone but could have been laptops etc.

Please CHECK YOUR SECURITY and make sure staff know as well.

Or go for the GUN PITS AND SNARLING DOGS

    Tex

Having done some delivery work myself I agree with you Chalky that it’s easy to get into places if you have a clip-board in one hand and a pen in the other. I once delivered to a major government building with 3 security men on the front reception, asked to use the loo and had to be signed in and badged up to be escorted 50ft down the corridoor. I fully expected to be escorted back out again but somehow got mixed up in the lunchtime rush took a wrong turn and was in the thick of things.

I had plenty of time to flick open my wristwatch camera and digitally scan some very sensitive documents, plant a few bugging devices, change into a catsuit and shimmy down the drainpipe but found my own way out a few minutes later tossed my badge onto the reception as the security guards just looked at each other and gulped (hot) (hot)

One company I once worked for got broken into three times over a matter of three months, the police said they usually come back a few times in a short period as most people do not expect it to happen again especially so soon! The first time they took the pc base, all the pens, tea bags, sugar, coffee & the flaming biscuits!!! Cheeky toe rags!!

After the first burglary an alarm was installed but it happened again – apparantly an alarm is not much good on a small industrial estate on a weekend – with no one about to take notice of it! Then went up the bars on the doors & windows & an alarm installed that once it goes off it rings 3 telephone numbers to alert that it is going off. On the 3rd attempt they got caught due to the new silent alarm – one of them drilling into the door lock & the other filling his bag with whatever he could

I know quite a few companies who now have these alarms installed, good investment, we have one ๐Ÿ˜€

The following gets away from the original posting but is security related and formed my opinions about people fairly early in life; TRUST NO ONE!

I won’t say what the store was but as a young trainee retail manager I was given the responsibility by the relief manager of staking out a particular cupboard where the tills carrying ยฃ50 floats were stored overnight. Money was going awol on a regular basis. The Manager and I got in early and crouched behind some boxes in the warehouse, observed a number of suspects acting suspiciously but alas after a week no results. The following week the same manager was caught red-handed and admitted theft over a period of time. ๐Ÿ˜ฎ ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

On another occasion the area manager for a particular section was concerned at the sudden decrease in profits over the previous 2 months and embarked on a concerted effort to find out what was going on. After 3 more months profits against turnover were still down and this was having a reflection on his managerial abilities. The axe hung above his head. It was obviously theft but why couldn’t the culprit be caught? It turned out to be his own Mother who had used her knowledge of security check times to thwart the system (:) (:) (:) (:) I’d loved to have been a fly on the wall when they met up after work!

I am so sorry to hear of your break in – Hopefully your business will not be affected too much by this and you are able to get up and running again quickly.

I strongly recommend BT redcare for anyone worried about break in’s.

Our insurance company insisted we install this before we could get cover. BT redcare is linked via telephone to a monitoring station. If the alarm goes off, the monitoring station automaticaly call the police , the keyholder, and the alarm company that services the installation.

We recently had a situation where a stolen car rammed the roller shutter at our premises, this set off the alarm – by the time I arrived the police were already there – the culprits had gone but nothing had been stolen.

You can buy BT redcare from any “nacos” approved alarm company. Expect to pay about ยฃ400 a year for servicing with BT redcare included in the contract.

I also have signs front and rear at our premises saying these premises are monitored by BT redcare 24 hrs.

Most importantly keep back ups of all your work – and as Neil has already suggested – attach your dongle keys to a printer cable so that in a worst case scenario, you will at least be able to reinstall all your software on another computer to get up and running again as soon as possible.
