    Hi Dave,

I wanted to ask why Freehand!

    Have you heard of Illustrator?

Only joking, but it would help if you were to give some reasons for your sugesting freehand.

As a total shot in the dark i’d guess why Corel Draw and not Freehand, is because corel can easily be used to cut vinyl with most plotters with out having to have the expensive programs like Signlab or Flexsign. Just using very very thin outlines and a driver supplied buy the cutter company (mostly this is done with roland machines). You can also get add ons for corel draw such as co-cut, signtools, and umm i forget the others but there out there, you can also get add ons for illustrator can’t recall the name now but i posted it recently in another thread, these allow you to start up in vinyl cutting with out the huge outlay of signlab/flexisign.

Anyway my point is, as far as i’m aware there is no possibilities to use freehand in this way as a vinyl cutting program….. but maybe i’m wrong!! and there is a way or an add on that you can get?!? If so don’t keep it a secret let us all know!

    I bought a Suma D60 about a year ago.
I was using Corel Draw 9 at the time so I bought the co-cut add on to run the cutter. Not being a very cleaver chap last week I bought a big thick book by Que, Using Corel Draw9 which cost me fifty odd quid so I could get the best out of my software.
Unfortunaty due to a flood my clip art libraries catalog got ruined,so I thought it would work out cheaper to buy a second hand copy of Corel than to buy something else that I wouldent be able to use anyway.
Hope you can understand this rubbish.
Buy the way what a great sight youve got here I droped on it by chance last week and been logged on ever since.

    Hi Lorraine
I’m not a software expert. I know that Coral Draw seems to have been adopted by the Sign Industry – because it’s pushed at us by machine sellers I suppose, but why?
Illustrator has been around a long time – is it not intended for lithographic printers layout?
If you get a chance to examine Freehand – it’s like a pro Corel Draw. Of course I use freehand and I suppose I’m biased, but it was recommended to me by pro Graphic designers. Perhaps Corel Draw has had special modules added for Vinyl Cut?
Everyone gets thro’ no matter what they use – Corel seems to have been lucky to have been the chosen one.

As it turns out the post was primarly for the books/catalogues

But the reason I guess, and I can’t be 100% sure as I have no idea on the price of freehand, is the cost, Corel Draw is cheaper than Illustrator, but is it cheaper than freehand?? I guess for this reason alot of companies have taken it onboard and made add ons so you can cut from corel as mentioned in my earlier post.

Just means its easier to sell a cutter and softwear package to every man and his dog!

As far as Illustrator goes, It’s Adobe’s equivalant to Corels Draw and Macromedia’s Freehand.

Quark is the program that’s “industry standard” for lithographic printers layout, though it is being closely followed by Adobe’s InDesign, which in my opinion is far easier to use.

Well I’m a Corel boy been with it since version 3.
I’m a newbie at vinyl self taught setting up artwork for litho.
Corel has all you need I believe (wait for the backlash).
I’ve done artwork from single colour business cards right through to 6 colour presentation folders & brochures.

    Oh & I use a PC.

    Hi Lorraine
Freehand 9 (not the latest) is maybe £300
I believe it to be far better than Coral Draw – But I don’t use Coral!
    Worth a look tho’
