Volvo Sweden now offer new wrapped cars as an option
Posted by Phill Fenton on April 19, 2008 at 1:07 pmVolvo have now included a vehicle wrap on it’s options list for the C30.
This is only available in Sweden at the moment. Buyers pay a premium of about £1500 for the wrapped car. Volvo say the wrap protects the paint for a couple of years after which it can be removed and re-applied – or the car is returned to it’s factory fresh original finish.

quote James Martin:Good money though: £1500
Doubt if volvo will be paying more than half that for the print and wrap

A big contract for someone. And a lot of possible comebacks.

You’re not kidding!
They’re not dealing with commercial vehicles (toolboxes on wheels) here, it’s peoples pride and joy. And I suspect that Volvo owners are unlikely to be less finicky than the majority of car owners.
The problems as I see it…….
Unrealistic customer expectation. They will expect the wrap to be as good a finish as paint. The wrappers will have a big advantage in that they will be able to do the job before any handles, locks, trim etc are put on the cars, maybe even before they are completely assembled, but, even so………
Being held to different standards. With a van fleet, we can do a prototype, show it to the end user, tell him that this is what he is going to get for the price he is paying, and thereby set a standard that we can stick to. Even with vans, that can very quickly fall apart, for instance in the case of a franchise, where all the vans are owned and paid for by individual franchisees, and they all have different ideas of what is acceptable to them.
Money. Peter is correct. Volvo won’t want it to cost them any more than half the retail price so, if I were offered the job, I would run away and hide. In reality Volvo will get their own staff trained up. That’s not too difficult because they will be one trick ponies and will probably be able to do an excellent job on the very limited range of panel shapes that they will have to deal with. Unlike us, who have to be able to deal with anything.
Accident damage repair is going to be a nightmare. Never mind people in your local bodyshop, and I’m going to get a few hurt feelings here, but the skill levels amongst many of my colleagues in the graphics industry just isn’t up to it. We send out a lot of stuff for damage repair and are increasingly getting calls from end users asking us to go out and put jobs right. For just one company we have got to do 225 miles to Doncaster and back next week, we did 300 to Southampton last week, and 120 to Warwick the week before.

Is it just me who thinks they are going to sell very few of these ? Apart from most of the designs looking awful, people who buy Volvos are older and quite conservative, and arent going to want their car they have just spent £20K + on to look like some kids have attacked it with a load of crayons.
If it were a different company, doing it on their small engined hatchbacks aimed at first time drivers under 20 I could possibly see the point.
Yes, there is a market for modified cars, but not Volvos, and the kids who want to mod their cars to look like something from the Fast n Furious arent going to pay £1500 for a badly designed set of decals.

What a great Site!
I dunno though, I know what you guys say, but the Swedes have a reputation of being ‘out there’ trying anything cutting edge.
Whilst the rest of us give Volvo owners are bit of curry, the Swedish ‘way’ is to try anything new. That’s my take anyway.
The C30 is aimed at the youth market I guess, and most youths would jump at the opportunity to be the first on the block with something different. That’s universal with the age.
The comments here are correct tho, heaven forbid if they have a prang..
I read somewhere that the Oracal 870/970 was developed for this very thing, mainly utilities – Fire, Police, Ambulance and stuff. Volvo may be thinking outside the square.

I quite like some of the those designs.
I reckon its all good. . . after all BMW have do it with their mini’s. . I’m sure VW have done it on limited edition beetles. . . so why not volvo. .. before we know it ford will be offering the focus "chav" ST in a Burberry wrap 😀 -
I had this idea a few months back with our local Mini dealer…..now I have fuel for the fire. But can see the issues with regards to accident repair, but I don’t mind sending someone to fix it if they pay for it.
If you guys aren’t interested I’ll take them 🙂
