    Hi

Looking to upgrade my system and purchase some new equipment, utilise my older stuff too.

My question is which operating system to go for, know it’s been asked before but maybe there’s some new views around now that Vista might have settled.

Suppliers I have spoken to lean towards XP being still more stable and friendly to older software.

Soon to purchase new print and cut so would 64 bit be better? Realise I might have to ditch my old signlab 5 + other software perhaps but I use corel x4 mainly so no problem there I hope + the rip in the print and cut should handle the cutting side too.

Will my old roland cm24 be workable under 64bit environment since it should only be receiving plotting info still albeit maybe faster?

Is there indeed an immense speed advantage with 64 over 32 bit?

    Thanks

    Ian :lol1:

Ian, I am sure you will get loads of answers both for and against each system. Personally I would stick with XP for now if I was in your position. I would keep your old system until such time as you had bought your new equipment, got everything running smoothly then think about upgrading things like computers. That way if you do have problems at least you know you have a fall back which won’t cost you any lost work.

If your running more then 4gb ram go 64bit. If not 32bit will suffice.

Speed difference? I don’t think there is much difference.

Not many 64bit apps written to take full advantage of it yet. You can still run 32bit apps on XP64.

I wouldn’t bother with Vista at all, wait until Windows 7 if you want a newer operating system otherwise get XP.

My preference would be for XP as it’s most likely supported by most of your equipment.

I run 64 bit Vista and it is stable, much better than 32 bit. All good printers and cutters should have 64 bit drivers availible, only problem i have had is when someone came in to do profiling and the profile machine did not have 64 bit driver.
I use Wasatch, Adobe premium, cutting master 2 on my pc and they are all 64 bit.

64 bit makes a PC as stable as a MAC but unlike the MAC there is tons of software you can chose run on it….

    Regards

    Russell.
