  • Vinyl onto rear window of a van – advice pleeease!!

Posted by John Dorling on August 21, 2008 at 11:13 am

    Hi all,

    after some advice (again!)

Got to put some graphics onto a rear window of a Fiat Doblo (tailgate back, so 1 piece of glass, presumably heated).

Should I just use normal vinyl and put it on the outside (I think there’s a rear wiper), or do I reverse cut and apply to the inside (over the heating element)???

    Thanks is advance…

    John

id ask the customer what they would prefer. I would always try to get away with doing it on the outside….with heating element wires etc etc, its always easier doing it on the outside and tidier but if customer really wants it for security purposes, then peeling off vinyl from the outside to look to see what is in the van is possible.

    Thanks Cheryl

It’s only lettering so not sure if that makes a difference? Also it’s a Fiat Doblo car so it’s got windows and seats all round. Doesn’t leave a lot of room for graphics.

Would you suggest a translucent vinyl or just anything with a clear adhesive?

    Thanks

I’d do it on the outside with a good quality cast material. Less likely for the wiper to be an issue that way. Do it dry too. Less problems all round, and if you do get tiny bubbles, they’ll come out in a day or two because cast breathes better than cal – poly, or mono 😉

I do what Shane does, only he probably does it better.
No wet app, use cast, not translucent, tell the client not to use their back window wiper for a few days and to park it in the sun the first day.
I do use Oracal 651 on windows sometimes, but it chips easily with an ice scraper in winter.
Not that the customer will admit to using one…
