  • Vinyl on the inside of windows?

Posted by Keith Barnett on January 5, 2011 at 5:57 pm

Ok, I’m probably being really dumb but I cannot find anything here that’ll help me. I am very new to this and just wondered what sort of vinyl do you use on the inside of windows?
    Thanks!

Any vinyl, just not dark colours unless backed up by a lighter background.

thats not completely correct, if you are using a vinyl with a blockout adhesive, or some mirror effects as they are only one sided.

    Cheers for the comments.
Still a bit confused, do you just stick it to the inside of the window and you can see it through the window like normal? Would have thought white would come through darker?
    Thanks,

Keith if you are doing text going on the inside you need to mirror it, other wise it will not be readable, the colour depends on the inside of the premises usually a lighter colour is easier to read.

Thanks, I didn’t think about reversing.

of course it won’t be readable from the inside 😀 but I imagine it needs to be read by outside customers, not people who are already inside.

On the whole…if you can stick it to the outside, it’ll stick to the inside.

    A few provisos…

Certain hi-visibility vinyls are NOT the face colour both sides – some are white.

Print vinyls are typically white or grey on the adhesive side.

Metallic film vary – some are dual sided, others for face only application.

Reflective too – specifically front or rear apply.

Tinted glass will reduce the visual impact by a considerable amount. If white paper on the inside turns mid-grey…so will white vinyl…and black will disappear.

Glare from the glass also affects visibility as does the apparent ‘background’ through the glass. White vinyl against a white painted interior is pointless…

    Hope that helps.

One thing worth remembering is, ask the customer if they are likely to put any net curtain behind it if it’s a cafe etc. The other thing that’s common with offices is to consider the colour of the vertical blinds or like. Light colours are generally better, but the window display/background will influence the decision.

When I paint, it really has to go inside, it just wouldn’t last otherwise, vinyl is a lot more durable on glass. So if you’ve got to pull half the window display out, or it’s going to be a nightmare to get to the corners, has to be done while shop is open etc, sticking outside is fine.

Well quite, but I reasoned that if you didn’t realise this before travelling to site after weeding it, you’re more likely to be licking windows rather than sticking things on them :lol1:
