  • Vinyl not adhering to painted interior wall

Posted by Dave Rich on November 14, 2010 at 5:44 pm

    Hi All
Seem to have problems with applying normal vinyl to interior painted walls, used a meta mark 4 series and some is fine but the silver and grey seems to waiting to fall off. Are there any vinyls that adhere to painted walls better than most?

How long did you leave the paint to dry? If less then a week expect problems due to outgassing.

Im not surprised it didnt work out. I all ways sign write this sort of thing. I would never apply vinyl to an exterior wall. You can buy a printable vinyl that is meant to be stuck on brick but would not rate the life span to be much.

It was an interior matt emulsion painted wall, left to dry for more than a week.

Some paints are designed to stop any thing from sticking to them. I all ways use dulux ecosure and dont have any problems. Best to advise what paint should be used and if the wall is not painted to your standard advise how it should be or refuse to fit the graphics and give them a quote for you to prep the walls. I have done this plenty of times and end up preping the walls my self. My customers are more happy as well.

The only vinyl that sticks well to emulsion well is large digitally printed panels when tilling. Anything else just seems to fail.

You could try very thin cast material & heat it up after with a heatgun so it molds to the surface (a bit like applying vinyl to blackboard painted signs)

Other than that, I usually paint it on using paintmask, or if that doesn’t stick (most likely) use a vinyl that does. I did a whole School like this once & it worked well, but was time consuming.

If you advise to use a watered down PVA glue as a sealant first, and I mean really watered down probably about 10-1 that should do the trick and you should see anything on the wall, safest way would be to apply to the whole wall first.

I sell wall decals to the public and I advise sealing the wall with watered down PVA glue first, not had a problem. Leave to dry for a couple of days before applying decal

Just been to an open day at William Smith Ltd where we had a demo and practice with this 3M Scotchcall vinyl. Stuck to a wall simply and well. Probably quite pricey though.

Use Hexis SUPTAC and you’ll have no probs on internal emulsioned walls – no need to seal etc and good range of colours

Hi Mate, I have been sticking X Film vinyl to interior Matt emulsion painted walls for over 10 yrs on a regular basis and have have very few issues at all.
To state the obvious the wall must be completely dry! The only problem I have encountered is sticking to yellow or green paint? for some reason, maybee some kind of additive in these colours, it doesnt stick too well? I allways get good adhesion on white/blue/black/ect
