When applying vinyl to the back of clear acrylic sign panel and then fixing that panel to board with tape or silicon I have found that it will eventually start pulling the vinyl away from the sign panel……..

Is there a way of avoiding this (?)

Don’t know if i explained myself well there 😀

    Cheers

i think i know what you mean andrew, (might be wrong) 😀
i think its because the tape is fixed firm to a solid panel but the face is sticking/holding the vinyl which is holding the acrylic.
when the acrylic expands and contracts lightly with heat/sun etc the tape stays strong in situ and as a result the vinyl is prized away from the panel where the tape grips?
as i said, may have picked you up wrong… however, i did a sign a good while back, i had similar issues, but not the same, end event was i had to us a small 10mm trim and slide the panel into it. or was it L-shaped trim around the edge? hmm cant remember sorry… anyway, just thinking out loud here, hope this helps… ….. a bit 😕 😕

That’s right Rob the vinyl pulls away from the clear panel and shows…..I didn’t really want any visible fixings however it’s in a pretty exposed area..

Have seen that on a few bits & pieces over the years. Between the adhesives reacting & the stresses in the materials Rob is probably right.

To counteract it a bit (like a 75% fix) – another coat of vinyl on the back of the sign.

Best result I’ve had was with a complete adhesive back so no small areas to detach / pull.

this may sound daft and not sure the tape you are using but what about Foam stick pads doubled up? i can see a VHB or Strong double sided tape doing what you have mentioned, but if you doubled up or maybe even a thick foam tape. then the foam thicknes maybe enough to allow movement within the acrylic and not prize the acryilic away from the vinyl. (hope that made sense?)

maybe even velcro hook and loop tape?
