    Hi All.
Can anyone tell me how the old cinema marquee signs were constructed? You know the type, the usher would apply the film name in individual letters to an illuminated light-box. The manufacturer we use has suggested a rail system with letters on squares of clear perspex. However in any picture we’ve seen the letters are larger than the horizontal metal bars(rails). I’m open to any suggestions. Being only 30, I’m afraid this one is a little before my time.

I always thought the letters were hung on wires.

Makes sense. What would you suggest then? Flat Cut Dibond with hooks glued to the back. Are there then safety issues involved with regard to them blowing off? Baring in mind I’m in Aberdeen.

It would be easier just to buy the set.
Usually these were made by Wagner.
You could probably even find Wagner Marquee Letters on eBay.
I think Gemini makes these too.

    Stephen,

The early letters, around the 1900’s had a flange on the back and hung in a slot/groove on the Marquee.

You could make a lightbox with thin strips of perspex stuck on the front and have the lettering made with a lip to sit onto the perspex strip.

Flat cut dibond letters with a 25mm flange turned over at the top would do it.

    Hope this helps a little.
    Best wishes,
    Cheryl

P.S. being only 30 is not an excuse for not knowing. I wasn’t around during the war, but I still know it happened :lol1:

You are correct Cheryl. Being only 30 is no excuse. But hopefully my willingness to learn compensates for my lack of knowledge.

Thank you for the info. I definitely think the flange idea would look better than the clear perspex squares.
