As I’m relatively new to the sign trade, could someone please give me their views on applying vinyl dry and wet onto vehicles?

I’ve found when applying vinyl dry the vinyl sticks to the vehicle very easy after smoothing over with a spreader but I tend to get lots of air pockets in the vinyl. Also, the vinyl sometimes sticks to the vehicle too early – especially on hot days when applying outside – and gets left on the vehicle when trying to re-align the vinyl using the application tape!

When using it wet – this is with soapy water – the vinyl does not leave any air pockets when applyed but I find once the application paper is also wet, the vinyl does not stick to it any more and stays on the vehicle. Also though, on warmer days, once the vinyl has been applyed and smoothed over, there is not enough sticking power on the vinyl to remain on the vehicle when pulling the application tape off!!!!!

Basically i’ve been thrown in the deep end without being shown how to apply vinyl or anything – didn’t even know how to work a cutter last year!!

    Please help!!!

Gavin, Eddie has explained it quite well, don’t take the backing paper of the graphic first and then try to align. If you need some help and can spare a day away pop down to Fife and we can give you some pointers. You will learn far more than you will reading posts.

    thanks guys,

That sound great Martin, I could use some friendly advise!

It’s ok for putting on small text like that but what about larger graphics ie squares and circles??

Where do you all get your supplies from ie masking tape, spreaders etc..

I’ve always used Victory design but I’ve found them to be quite pricey, anyone give me any where else to try??
