• Viewing EPS Files?

Posted by Martin C on September 16, 2003 at 10:38 pm

As I await delivery of my new sparkly PC the time will come when I need to clean a lot of stuff from my existing one…..so…….

Bare with me on this one…….here goes………

I use Corel Draw and export for cutting by converting to curves and sending as an EPS to the Script folder. Using Signscript a basic cutting package I then import the EPS and bobs your uncle.

The problem I have is that Signscript abbreviates the file name so
‘Bills Hairdresser Black’ becomes ‘Billsh’ Bills Hairdresser White becomes ‘Bilsh1’. so I end up with a load of files that have to be opened before I can decide whether they are any good or not as their names bare little resemblance to the job title.

To delete an old file I have to open it, open the script folder as a seperate page via ‘My Computer’, find the file and remove it which takes ages.

    So my question is……….

Does anyone know of a way of viewing these files quickly, ideally as a page of thumbnails, so I can avoid going through this long drawn out process?

    Martin,
can’t you put them all in my documents first?

We can save every file and any file format with full names. That way you can at least see the title.

Martin I used Signscript at one time for sending files to the plotter. When exporting to Signscript I used just 3 or 4 eps files e.g. ‘to-scrip1.eps’ etc. but never used these eps files to archive the drawings. I found storing the file as .cdr the most convenient and only export as and when required.
If only certain areas of a drawing required cutting you can copy these to an extra page within the drawing and name that page e.g. ‘Cut Page’. If required in the future you only need to export the cut page to ‘to-scipt1.eps’ and away you go.
I know this doesn’t help you with your current problem but you may consider using this method in the future if you continue to use Signscript.

I take it that you’re not using a Windows driver direct from Corel to the plotter yet!!

Thanks all. A few things to consider there……..

Alan, no I’ve been sent the Roland drivers and been told how to cut direct from Corel but I’m very busy at the moment and can’t afford to mess up any existing settings until I get some back up in the form of the awaited PC.

I’ve reached this position due to laziness I suppose. I have a ton of stuff within Corel which is duplicated as EPS files. At first it was easy enough for me to remember what each file was abbreviated to but now it’s getting nigh on impossible. Perhaps my memories going with age!! 😕

Sorry to burst your bubble Steve but you can have such long file names in windows too!

    The problem is:

    quote :

Signscript abbreviates the file name so
‘Bills Hairdresser Black’ becomes ‘Billsh’ Bills Hairdresser White becomes ‘Bilsh1’

If signcript were available for Mac I’m Sure it would still do the same thing!

Save only the original files in .cdr in your case. Delete all the eps and if you need it again just export it from the original. You could delete the eps after 30 days or something.

Actually there’s few difference in mac/pc prices. And mac is 1000 times better. I’m still using some 10 years old macs. What about those old PC?

BTW, CorelDraw is just for amateurs. Really bad program. I don’t know why is so extended. Freehand or Illustrator are much better.

I reckon the very best available config for signmaking is MAC G5, GRAFTEC 1220 PLOTTER, running Flexi 7.0 with Illustrator 10, (Freehand 7, just in case), Photoshop 6 Quark express 6 and an HP 5500PS IJ PRINTER TAGGED ON THE END the world is your oyster with that lot what say you PC people

Erm – the fastest way to accelerate a Mac is at 9.8m/sec/sec. 🙂
I still remember my fiirst mac – a 128kb machine , the first with a mouse and a trash can – worked a charm till Apple left South Africa and made me a puter orphan with a boat anchor!!!
Heres my rant – Puters , no matter what platform have become a nightmare – they are NOT easier to use – my mom who is 70 and is so technically challenged that a pop-up toaster is a problem and whose cell just says Yes or NO (she just doesnt answer it) should be able to say to her puter “Load the e-mail from my daughter in aussie”!!!!
As Microsnot upgrade their systems , you got to buy the latest gazillion meghurtz puter and hire a rocket scientist to set up and maintain a simple network apart from spending the trillion pounds and 100 000 hours scanning for virii and other nastys!!!
Damn – I wish my linux box could run my bloatware appz!!

    Steve, are you mad!!! 😮
Photoshop 7 on a Mac is the BIZZ, 6 is a bit wobbly mate.

    As a matter of interest how’s Quark 6, I’m still happy with 4.1, 5 looked V wobbly 😕

Hey Steve wouldn’t the world be a happier place if everyone used Macs?
However much Msoft try to copy the wonderful Mac system they never quite manage it do they. 😉 😉

Cheers, Steve (A very happy MAC USER)

Jasc Photoshop 7 is a program I use for viewing .eps files and also lets you print a booklet if desired. I think we discussed this earlier and I demonstrated many of the suggestions that were given and I decided this was the best one so far…If I find anymore I’ll let you know!!! Try Jasc Photoshop demo and try for yourself. Once downloaded and opened press ctrl-B for the browse option and select the folder you want to view. Hope this helps!!!!
