  • Very thick rigid material required.

I need to make a big toothbrush, like 6 feet high. Also, it needs to stand up on its own when leaned against a wall without being all bendy and floppy. I don’t need to carve it – 2 dimensional will suffice. It would need to be fairly lightweight (so a weak girly Dentist can load and unload it from her car).

Anyway, does anyone have any recommendations for a suitable material?

    SignFoam.

I just did a search and there are no UK distributors. It’s great stuff though. You can get it in different densities, some just about as hard as wood, if not harder. You don’t need to prime it if you don’t want to. It has a “cell” structure so priming helps smooth the surface. It is completely water proof too so no rotting. 😀
Thickness up to 12″ thick. You can bond pieces together though so you could probably get a thinner sheet and just glue it up then carve it.
    Hope this helps.

    Teeth no. Toothpaste, actually yes.

It’s for my girlfriend. She’s an Oral Health promoter type thingy and she wants them for a series of roadshow type things.

There must be a similar product to signfoam available over here?

Does Henry still come around here? He uses signfoam ,but I think he is in Sweden. He might know a distributor though. The stuff is awesome to use. You can use all the tools you use to shape wood on it. Sands nicely.

    Andy,
as John said polystyrene. It’s light and easily worked ( woodsaw, sander etc).
Try and get a high density foam it will be less liable to breaking or use extruded polystyrene this tends to be pink or blue in colour.

    Rigid.

I’d try Signfoam or Precision Board.
