  • Vertical line appeared on laptop screen ?

Posted by John Gregson on December 30, 2008 at 8:01 pm

    Hi All,
Hope you all had a good Christmas.

I’ve had an "e system 3086" laptop for a few years now and this morning after switching it on a red spot (pixel) has appeared top right of screen. A yellow vertical line drops off this red pixel and leaves a line all the way down the screen. I’ve rebooted and this hasn’t cured the problem – is this a sign that the screen is on the way out ? if it is can someone recommend where to get a new screen or will it be beyond repair ?

I’m also after some advice on a notebook – I know that these don’t have a cd drive but can you use them in the same way as a laptop if you had an external usb CD drive ? I’m looking at an Acer aspire 150 with xp as standard.

    Cheers John

    Yup,

Sounds like the screen is shot. Will cost more to repair than its worth. Bought my last laptop direct from HP/Compaq. If you can wait, sign up to their newsletter and wait for the discount vouchers to drop in :lol1:

Also check out Misco, some pretty good deals there too

Cheers Graeme, thought as much. I’ve seen a few replacement screens between £60 and £100 but I think it would be a better option getting a new laptop.

Been onto the Misco site – liked the Samsung NC10 netbook.

I’ll have to have a look around and see whats left in the shops in the new year

Hi Martin, The laptops don’t seem to last that long – i’ve got an old Tiny computer with crt moniter and its still going strong now after about 10 years. Laptops seem to have a life of about 3 years max. 😕

hm… so its not heat related as it is straight away… what about if you move the machine, does it get worse or go away?

oh by the way…. Netbooks are not ‘windows’

Hi Dave, The line doesn’t disappear if the screen is moved but for a while now the screen flickers when moved. I thought it might be a heat issue as the bottom of the casing gets really hot after a few hours use.

The netbook i’ve been looking at is:

which seems to have windows xp home as standard.

so it seems to be XP and Intel Atom, the new low-power high-pro processor
    http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=vJAuJGHoGEs

Atom half the processor power of a Celeron
    http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=rWFkRUOFVmM&NR=1

Well, I am currently updating my laptop and ripping out the Celeron processor as its toooo slowwww, I do have photoshop installed but it’s useless. Intel Core Duo or Duo 2 is what you should be looking for mate and its best to look at the deals now as after xmas things will go up.

With regards fixing your one, the dells normally come apart by taking the strip above the keyboard out, normally snaps out and then the keyboard lifts up. You might see a video cable between monitor and main board, this might have come loose and might need some pressure to put it back.. however thats what is in a Dell, not a ‘e-machine ’

This reminds me of Rachael’s almost two year old laptop, a Dell Inspiron 1501 (I think?) Only half of her screen displays anything unless you clamp it at the top with one of my regular clamps for cutting correx.
She did drop it once, but we thought it was the battery or charger plug in, so I got her those new for her birthday (about $100)
It wasn’t, still using the clamp and that damn thing is sooooo slow.
I installed crap cleaner and Avast. Tried uninstalling AIM but couldn’t.
Messed with it for about two hours last night.
    What a pain.
Takes about 15 minutes to log onto the Internet with a cable modem.

Bought this for my ever-so-fussy/ trendy/ very computer literate nearly 13 yr old for xmas in a panic after being let down by Dell at the last minute for xmas delivery.
After the initial ‘oh it’s a samsung’ response he has not been been parted from the darn machine, had a wee play earlier and I am very impressed myself! I would recommend this one to anyone getting a new laptop, only trouble is I want one now!

Jill, clamping top of monitor, hmm sounds bad actually.
If you ordered it with Accidental cover or whatever it is called, they may fix it if still within period.
I know you wont do it but just posting it anyway..
most laptops have either a thin cable or your has this a lead that is loose, it is under the snap off cover where power buttons are.
the screws for the screen are on the hinges and covered normally with plastic caps and then you need a new ebay screen and just swap them over, it will work but perhaps someone with patience needs to do it.

Thanks for the advice Dave, thought it might be a little under powered. That Laptop looks great Katie and the spec is quite good too!.

Aah! 👿 – bloody screens. My daughter has just informed me that the touch screen on her Onda mp4 player "Christmas present" now has cracks on it. Had a look at it and it’s totally knackered. The outside glass seems ok but underneath there are loads of cracks and shards of glass.

She’d been carrying it in her bag, along with her mobile, and they must have been bashed together. It boots up but you cannot use the touch screen – knew it was a bad idea getting one of these, glad i didn’t opt for the more expensive ipod touch. Its now an expensive 8gb memory stick.
    :lol1:

Santa’s elves had made this onda in early November so even if I could send it back its out of warranty anyway. 👿

These kind of things normally come in three’s – I’m scarred to switch anything on or leave the house at the moment :lol1:

This might be a complete Red Herring. I have a small Psion palmtop computer which had some vertical lines appear on the screen, and cutting a long story short I replaced the ribbon cable which powered the screen and all was well again.

Hi Steve, I’ve been scouring a few websites trying to get some info on this. Dave R also mentioned loose connections – will look into this before splashing out on a new lappy.

well i just taken my Inspiron 1520 apart completely, a little different to the old Dell’s I have taken apart before. I ripped out the Celeron processor and replaced it with a Core Duo. Vista has caused me a problem yet and everything seems great with this new speed… I have some additional memory on its way. Cost me about £80 fro processor and £20 for memory, thought I would try and max out this thing.

I occasionally get a vertical yellow line on my lappy, at first I thought there was a problem but have found out if I leave it alone it will boot up but takes about 3 or 4times as long, try leaving it alone for 20 mins and see what happens if you havent done so alraedy

    Hi John,
It doesn’t disappear, if left for off for a few days, but it’s not getting any worse. I’ve done a back up of all my work on the HD and will wait and see what happens over the next few days/weeks/months. Worst possible outcome would be a new lappy. :lol1: i’ve tracked down a company on ebay thats flogging screens for about £60 so thats also an option.
