  • Versaworks cut issue with fades – help needed, please?

Posted by John Mackenzie on March 16, 2015 at 10:29 am

I have been supplied some Illustrator artwork that has some fades in it, I have created a cutline but for some reason in Versaworks it prints the cutline as clear line and will not cut.

I am sure I came across this a couple of years and somebody told me how to save the file so that the cutline worked but I can’t for the life of me remember how it is done.

Any help much appreciated and as per usual with this type of job it is urgent!!!

    Try this

1.) CutContour paths need to be 100% opacity and be above any other elements in the layer. Place all CutContour paths at the top levels of the layer or create a separate layer for them above any other layers at 100% opacity
2.) Save as .EPS and in the EPS Options window, click on the "Custom" button under Transparency to uncheck "Convert all Strokes to Outlines"
3.) If saving as .PDF, revert back to version 1.3 and perform step 2 under "Advanced" in the Save Adobe PDF window

Transparencies conflict with spot colours (i.e the CutContour) and make the cut path invisible to some RIPS, including VW. Try opening the file in illustrator, copy the cut contour onto a new layer and lock they layer, then select the area with the fade in, including anything that crosses or touches it, and clicking Object, Flatten Transparency. This should convert the transparency to a raster image so that it doesn’t conflict with the CutContour.

Russell in artwork I have set-up I can put the cut contour anywhere (in relation to the layers) and it cuts fine, if I convert a CutContour stroke to an outline wouldn’t this make VersaWorks think that I now have 2 CutContours?

John I am sure that is along the lines of what I did a few years ago…

    Thanks.
