  • versacamm help with cutting after laminating

    Hi guys,
we have just bought a laminator, and would now like to use our versacamm sp540 to print then remove the print, laminate it, and then put it back in the machine to be cut!

Can anyone give me any clues on how to do this or point me to a thread if its been asked before?

    Cheers in advance

Dan, make sure it has a cut path prior to sending to rip.

Then choose print only and tick ‘crop marks(print & cut alignment) box, send to print.

When printed, leave to gas laminate and then put back in printer the way it came out with the black circle and rectangular box marks at front right.

Then choose same file and select cut only, you will see the marching ant lines around work, the sensor will find reg marks and will cut image.

When placing the vinyl back in printer after laminating place the the main reg mark (box&circle) next to the blade/printhead so it can find it, otherwise will search and eventually give up if can’t find marks.

Also there are settings to adjust blade pressure/ offsets etc, you will need to look at.

This is based on Versaworks which I think you are using.

    Hope that helps 😕

I find if I draw a horizontal line out to the edges of the sheet (lining the straight edge with the "ticks") and when I put this back in I line it up with the cutting strip. Just helps to keep things right when I cut.

Also I tend to do environment match too, dont know why but it seems to do a better job!

PS. Oh and try to keep to shortish runs as when they get too long they bang on the floor and put the cutting out of place.

Never used versaworks but I remember reading somewhere that the cut line (in colour rip) has to be animated (dancing they called it) and this means it is recognised.
Just cut your sheet before any printing to aid in correct line up with the front edge. Make sure the printers OWN registration marks are selected for crop marks. Do the Print only with crop marks and feed through about 100 120mm of vinyl before you cut your sheet when finished printing. Leave for 24 hrs laminate line up the front edge and tell it to cut only in the same file the plotter will look for the crop marks first then cut the outline. A good idea is to print something small and run through it / practice it yourself a few times before you commit to the full print can be costly otherwise been there done that.
You can also (to help the plotter find the registration marks) line the cutter over the top of the black circle it prints and press the base point button when you re insert the media for cutting.

    quote Gordon Forbes:

To add to the above tip – I have a piece of coloured tape/vinyl stuck onto the right hand side of the print dryer approx 90mm out from the sheet cutter groove. Once printed I just feed out the vinyl until the crop marks line up with my tape and I know I have fed out enough vinyl for when I reload.
