Versacamm Head Problem
Posted by Mark Reader on July 10, 2009 at 4:45 pmHi
Does anyone know how hard it is to change the Black/Cyan Head on a SP300 Versacamm, and if once fitted is any special setting up is necessary?.
There is a place on the Internet in Belgium selling the heads for 490 Euros has anyone had any experience with these or am i better going to Roland?

I bought a head for my sp300v from the place in Belgium last August. A lot cheaper than from Roland and when it arrived it was a genuine boxed Roland head.
As for changing the head yourself, it depends on how comfortable you are going inside your machine and if it is out of warranty or not. It took me about 20 mins to change the head and around 3 hours to set it up again mechanically and in the software of the printer. You need a copy of the service manual to walk you through doing it and be able to get into the service menu.
I was nervous as hell attempting this myself for the first time, but at the time for various reasons I could not justify the cost of getting the engineer out and the cost of the head from Roland, so because I am fairly mechanically minded I decided to attempt it myself. I am not recommending you take this on your self but for me, if the head needs changing in the future I would go through the process again. If you go down this route, make sure you order the head that is solvent resistant and change the dampers and wipers at the same time as these items are very little cost on top. Also if you are not VAT registered make it known to the company when you order as it will delay your delivery and be prepared for the 21% VAT charge in Belgium.

Bit off topic, but I just made the following calculation:
Cost of head in Namibia: 1500 Euro
Thus, E 3000 for the SP, E6000 for the RS to replace heads…. (!!)
Belgium: E 1000 / E 2000 ..I could buy a plane ticket to fly from Walvis Bay, Namibia, to Johannesburg, South Africa, and from there to France, take the train to Belgium, buy 4 heads ( 6 would be better !), spend a week on holiday in Belgium (my brother went 2 months ago. More than 300 years ago my forefathers came from Belgium to Southern Africa, so its like a Pilgrim’s trip) and fly back home again.
With change in my pocket!!!
