Heres some Smart cars that Simon from Creative Signs and myself worked on last week.

Digital output was with my Verrsa Camm printed onto Graphytyp wrap vinyl and laminate.
The “very” purple car was a mix between flat colour vinyl and digital. We used Avery Super cast pantone vinyl, a vinyl that you can really push, you can see this on the front wings. The rest is all printed vinyl.

Heres the rest of the images http://www.surreysigns.co.uk/vehicles/Cairns.htm

Nice. Where did you source the various images?

Really like that! 😀 How long did that take you both? I know the Smart car is only a small car, but I should imagine all those curves and sticky outty bits would make this kind of work quite difficult 😕

The Smart car seems to be used alot for promotional work within different companies. Is it a relatively cheap car to buy or is it just the unusual shape that does it? And how much would you charge for a job like this?

    Cheers, Dewi

They look great Mark 😀 interesting to hear you used the 900 series avery, I have been waiting for a job to try that on but not had the chance yet. It sounds like great stuff though if you can wrap like that with it !
Really eyecatching designs too, thanks for showing us.

cracking bit of work mark, as ever mate. 😉 your becoming a bit of a master at the old wraps and wrap designs are you not?
i like how each side shows a different advert but still doesnt look out of place.

    like nig said, why avery?
    how well does avery remove?
    are the graphics short term?

the reason i have to use a wrap vinyl & its short term i would use KPMF
long term and difficult curves etc i would use mactac.
both have their own problems but i would rate mactac higher as a real wrap vinyl.
KPMF is easier to apply, more forgiving and removes very very easily.
the down side is i dont feel 100% about it staying in recesses.
mactac is definately harder to apply and better application conditions needed. e,g, warm room. but when it is on it is on.. hard as hell to remove. with this in mind, thats its down side.
the bonus i find is if its on you know its staying on.

i must have a go at avery though, ive just never been thrilled when i have applied stuff in the past. exactly what avery range that i have used i do not know. it may have been bottom of the range for all i know. i fitted about 30 JCB vans in black vinyl,. fitting only as a company down south made the order up.

Mark, that looks great, nice one.

We wrapped a smart car recently and it was a right pain in the butt! It took twice as long to wrap as I anticipated and you wouldn’t believe that such a small car could require so much print.

We printed and wrapped this car for £450, big mistake, should have been double! I’d be interested to hear what you charged for that work.

that looks the dogs b***** too mate.. very bet lynch 😉
    nice one mate..

what type of vinyl did you use on that one?

i spoke with a mactac fitter and he says for a smart car “full wrap” your looking at about £700 wrapping only! again his location may be the london area, so your paying over the odds…

having said that, wrapping a car and doing the lot is a bit different.
if you are printing and wrapping. & you waste a bit, you reprint it at minimal cost. of a wrapper is only fitting and he spoils a part then he has to pay a good chunk of his wage for the wasted peice so obviously has to cover himself incase this happens.

Can I just say… A big thanks to Mark for letting me help..
(I only helped a little; it was mostly tea and biscuits)

It was great to see how it’s done, and look forward to helping Mark in the future (if he’ll have me).

This is something that gives you great satisfaction once the jobs completed

    Thanks again Mark

For this job we used KPMF and for two people, it took us the best part of a day and that was for the wrap only. I estimated 8-10 square metres of print on the job so I guess it cost us upwards of £100 to produce the graphcs. That is of course what it cost us and not what we would charge.

    It certainly is Rob,

They look so effective, and you can print what ever you like.
Your only limit is your imagination.

But it will be a long time before i get a machine. 😕

Its OK ordering in printed material for wraps, but if some of it gets buggered up, then you start running into problems..waiting for new stuff to be delivered matching colour etc.
Thats why i think your better off with your own machine and hopfully you’ll get loads of work

    Thanks for your comments.

We actually did 2 cars with each side being different to another.
One car had photographs and a patterned background so the whole sides had to be printed, including the purple colour. When I came to do the second car which was almost all purple I decieded to use a matching vinyl,
the nearest i could find was the avery supper cast, although I would have gone for another brand if it matched. Gotta say though that the Avery suppercast is a really good vinyl, very forgiving even without application tape and also very robust considering how thin it is.

The artwork was supplied to me by a designer in corell draw all mocked up over a smart car outline i supplied. Took me about 10 hours….yes 10 hours to “unpick” the artwork and get it ready for output. The “screen” effect edging to the purple had to be cut after the prints were laminated which was fun…..also the bitmaps were behaving strangly when output with the text as an eps. When pricing for wraps dont underestimate artwork prep it can take ages.

I think with 2 men you should be able to fit one car in about 12 hours. Some people would say thats to long others to short but there is a lot of fiddling about with wraps especially on a smart car. SignDevil is right for a small car they do use a lot of vinyl.

As far as charging is concerened it was between £700 – £1000 per vehicle.

    Mark

When you did your smarts, what did you find to be the hardest bit? For us it was the rear wheel arches where they bend round the back of the car. Loads of band language at that point 😆 😆 😆
