    Hi All

Does anybody use a tracking system on their company vehicles and if so can you recommend and offer any advice?

    cheers

Oh, the Joys of staff 🙂
the only way to track them, if it should be finished @ 3pm expect to see them @ 5:25,
If it should be finished @ 12 expect to see them after lunch,
and most importantly never expect it to be as quick as you think, because you know nothing, your only the boss 🙂

I looked into trackers but tbh any small business with them in, i found got serious agro from staff, works better on multinationals

    Tell me about it…

I was tracking Alisons mobile no. when she said she was out delivering signs (but in reality had gone shopping). I tried confronting her about it and never got any dinner for two days after that…

    Not a good idea :no1:

Trackers have many benefits..and the obvious downside of ‘big brother’.

Last place I worked had them on all ‘staff’ vehicles under the guise of it lowering insurance and fuel costs, knowing locations to better optimise call-outs…and control overtime…which it does.

It suddenly reduced the instances of all the fitters JUST managing to return to the depot at 4:55 in enough time to clock off…and they started coming back in some cases hours earlier – no more siestas by the beach or pointless drives.

With several data feeds such as location, speed, ignition position (OFF / ON / RUNNING) and location traps that can red flag a driver if they go within a set distance of a location (ie. issues with drivers going home during the day) or overspeed monitors.

For personnel and vehicle management it’s a great tool, but with great power comes…great responsibility. Hauling workers in because you can determine that they sat in one place for 45mins with the engine running or made 3 trips home during the day or drove 300miles in a night has to be done with care.

Stress to driver that this is here to help reduce costs so securing THEIR jobs.

Oh, they are gonna grumble and talk of mutiny and trust issues and ‘who does he think he is’ – ride it out, soon it’ll be the norm and they just appreciate having a job.

As i used to drive for a living i can tell you for sure, if i had a tracker i would of been in a depot longer as i must of wasted hours per month going long way around on way back to depot and i know for sure 80% of the other drivers did the same.

give them a mobile phone for the business and have a tracking app or simple things like find my iphone activated or the link friends function app. (think that’s what its called) and will show you that type of thing without much hassle or expense. the phone also has sat nav so no excuses as of getting lost etc if they dont currently have sat nav that is…

that’s NOT going to give you data readings, miles blah blah blah but if your just wanting to know why they haven’t turned up on a job yet, or whatever, its a quick way of locating them and seeing where they are going or if sitting in a lay-by sleeping. :lol1:

I use one of these strategically hidden in my motorhome. If it moves 200yds, I get a text with location and can follow it on Google maps:
