Did this this morning, well, started this morning !

took about 3hrs to match existing design, and to suit to this vehicle and scale properly, 2hrs max to cut weed and tape, and about 3-4hrs application (app would’ve been quicker if not for the endless stream of young scantily clad waitresses running in and out of a catering firm next door 😳 ), the door handles were supposed to have been off too, i asked if he was gonna do it and he said to go round em, not ideal as it cost me more time !

oracle 651, sky blue and traffic blue, for the lettering (perfect match to rest of fleet !), and kiwilite for the relective chequer, l dry app’d the light blue, and wet app’d the dark cos some numpty hadn’t thought to put any reg marks on ! when i came to the second side i actually cut the dark lettering into three sections, so much quicker and easier than struggling with 2mtrs on me tod !

only probs i’ve noticed (first time working with reflective) is you need three hands to weed it as it doesnt seem to want to let go of itself too easily, and when applying, if you have to snatch it back off for any reason, it leaves marks in the glue (?) which when the tape is removed, look like scuffs on the outside, luckily he didnt mind this as his guys normally fit the reflective and theirs are worserer than mine !

my own crit…. not keen on the centering of the telephone (made by my own fair hands !) above the numbers,

    yours ?

Hi Hugh… these types of vehicles are never easy to design for. I think its the mechanic head on these folk that say, oh do this, do that, oh and remember it must have checks/stripes for this or that reason blah blah… so in a nutshell they ask tell you all sorts of things to incorporate in the design… but leave you to make a meal from a dogs dinner…
I think what you have done shows improvement on your last job also. (Not saying anything wrong with last) just more to think about on this one… you did well…
As way of constructive criticism ide say…

Ide drop the bright blue shadow on the text. If the customer insists on it, give him a small drop shadow. The one you have is to busy, closes up the text and makes legibility from a distance to difficult.

A tip on this one, take on board when designing. “Never” stretch text for any reason other that bastardization of a graphic/font to create a unique graphic.
    It’s just a “no-go” area mate….
    e.g.
You have a line of text in Helvetica medium… it’s too long for the sign but most be one line. What do you do as the header text is Helvetica? Well… let’s say you use the header text as Helvetica bold… the line below that is too long, so to shorten length… chose Helvetica medium. Or better still, Helvetica medium condensed… this allows same light of text but covers shorter area.
It’s very hard NOT to over exaggerate graphics on screen. Reality is… always keep your work 15% smaller than what you think looks right. Once on the van it won’t look over powering and fits perfecto!

(It also helps when you are working from a vehicle outline as a size guide, as you are always correct on sizes.

im glad you have chosen to show more of your work mate. i appreciate your time in doing so…

thats basically it Kev, but appreciate what rob has said as it stands me with better fore thought for another job that i might have considered using those colours on, but as you can see on the vehicle behind it, it’s the company scheme and i ws told thats how it is,

Rob, thanks for the comments, i wasnt keen on the stretched numbers at all, but he said to do it and i couldnt really see anther way around it, in hindsight i should have spaced them a little closer so i could make them deeper aswell as wider, maybe ?! regards the text on the side, it was originally smaller to fit under the handles, as they didnt wanna remove them, then he saw the proposed designs and said it would have to be bigger and he’d get someone to take out the handles, so i squeezed it in on the dors as best could, trimmng ready made graphics down was a pain to, quite time consuming !

my other job today was one i should have done before sticking the new glass worktop down !!!

i dont think i’ll ever forget again, trying to apply transluscent from underneath was a nightmare, i’m not even gonna attempt to remove the bubbles this weekend ! i’ll see how many dissapear this week first ! just have to add a couple of lights underneath, bang down a carpet, get the desk, cutter and a few home comforts in (kettle, hammock etc !) and i’ll be in by the end of next week hopefully, fingers crossed !!

ps, bench is custom made by moi, 12ft x 2’6″, about 4ft high at the front and angles up at the back for easy weeding, angle is adjustable to flat for when i’m taping.

anyways, thanks, despite a few little issues i am quite pleased with the truck !

    thank you Carrie,

re bench.. I built it to suit my height and be comfortable for me to work on for prolonged periods, the only prob with it was when i slid the second sheet of glass on (toughened), it was rubbing slightly against the other and as i pushed it down on the sticky strips it chipped a slither off, now i’m paranoid i’ll break it, almost tossed a hammer on it this evening without thinking !! 😳

    Hi Hugh

I really like the truck, looks good.

I see what you mean about the telephone, but the angle of the photo makes it lok as though the telephone is correct, but the numbers are slightly off-centre (off-side more so than near-side?) As I say, it could be a different story if photo was straight on 😕

    I wish I had a really smart light table – I want one 👿

    Hi lorraine,

because i knew the front of the flyer (upright bit !) was verticle, when i spaced the numbers i drew a box and line them up against it on one side, before stretching them t the right, and then the same for the oposite side but the other way around, so although they follow the same true line vertically, it looks out centrally, just didnt notice it when i finalised the cut !

i’ve built the light box / bench cos i couldt find anything ready built, not could i afford to have one built, biggest i found on ebay was only 900x450mm ! no good when ya wanna layer a job in the workshop on a big logo ! most thing i do now i layer on site, but i figured that this way i’ve got all bases covered, i’m also gonna make a hard top for it should i need to use it for more vigourous work ! i think the bench owes me about £60 in timber and fixings, and the glass (2 x 1750 x 900 toughened) was £115+vat, wel, was actually a onner for cash 😉 ! so it was relatively inexpensive, the lights underneath i’m gonna rescue from a skip on sunday !

well done Hugh. can’t say much more than has already been said, other than your skills are coming alone really well, and you are not frightened of a challenge either.

    Keep to it mate,

    I like your table too.

I have a 3660×1220 glass top table here, and once you have worked with a glass top, you’ll never go back to a cutting mat. Just remember to use sharp blades, and don’t angle the blade too high as the top of the blades will scratch the surface. Just a tip mate thats all. After 12 years of using glass tops, I have made every mistake. One of my staff even hammered nails into timber on the glass top… until it broke of course 😮

The lights are a great idea. I had lights in my last table because I did heaps of translucent work for the taxi industry here, but the company went broke, and I built a new table without the lights this time round. Have regretted that decision a few times since 😥

    Anyway. keep posting your piccies

    Cheers

    Hey Hugh,
I just did a tilt tray too, and the biggest pain in the bum was the same bit you had trouble with ie the blue triangle bit. I had a design viewed by the client and approved yet when he saw the blue triangle bit he didn’t like it and wants me to redo it at my expense!
It was exactly as he had seen on screen! It was the name of the town starting small and going big. Should have been easy.

    Nice bench.

i think i coulda maybe done better if i’d had a dead square ‘side on’ view of the truck, the pic i had was at an angle so was a bit awkward to see the finished item would look like for sure, either way, i’ve a litle food for thought for the next ones,

bad luck on your job, hate it when they agree something and you can then tell that something is causing them to um and ah, you then feel obliged to offer to rectify what should be their problem !

bench…. thanks ! got to the skip down the road today and someone had already swiped the flourescent light fittings i wanted, there must have been twenty 4 -tube units ! damn !
