Well, today is official launch day, so I can now show you these.

I was in two minds whether it is cheating to put them up as not a lot of what you see is our own work. The basic design was done by an advertising agency and we could not possibly cope with the volume and timescale for mass production, so we aren’t doing that either. Then I thought that as I’d spent the best part of three months on the project, what the hell, so here they are.

My job was to take the basic design options and produce five slightly different prototypes so that final decisions could be made. Once approved I had to adapt it to suit the twenty one types of vehicles in service and then produce all the necessary files, parts lists and fitting guidelines, burn them to cd and send them off. I understand that mass production started last week so you should start seeing them on the road very shortly.

Before that though, fifteen Corsas were needed for the PR launch this morning, and I suppose we were the obvious choice to do those. That’s what you see in the photo.

It was hard work at times, and occasionaly frustrating and stressful, but
they were really nice people to deal with and I have enjoyed doing it.

There will also be some full wraps appearing. They are being done by Fenn Graphics and we had no input with those at all, but I thought I would just mention it because they form part of the fleet and look really impressive. Keep an eye open for them.

    Robert,

I forget what we used for the prototypes. Anything was good enough. They were completed on a Thursday afternoon in December, inspected and photographed the next morning and stripped off before we went home that night.

The production is specified as Avery 1005 with a liquid lam but, as we don’t have the facilities for that, the PR cars in the photo were done with the matching Avery laminate.

Yeah, s’good that John. Is this coincidently anything to do with their takeover of NTL? First I heard was today when I got a letter saying my money was now going to Richard Branson.

Good stuff… double-edged sword that fleet contract mularkey. great for money & occupied time…but soon becomes mind numbing 😕 I used to subcontract fitting work to a company up in Cambridge that used to do 300 Royal Mail trucks at a time. 10-12 of those a day & you need looottttttss of lager 😛

    Very nice!

Andy, it looks like the ntl brand will disappear then? I’d better keep my ‘now collector’s item’ ntl broadband installation cd safe ready to take to the antiques roadshow in 50 years time!

    Thanks lads.

Andy, it’s not really Virgin taking over NTL. Last year NTL and Telewest merged and the whole is now being re-branded as Virgin Media. I’m not sure how much of Virgin Media is owned by the Branson empire, it may be none at all if it is a pure licensing exercise, although I do recall reading in the Sunday papers that their share was about 25%, but even then, with the cloak of secrecy then applicable, it may be that the journalist was guessing and knew no more than anyone else.

Bruno, we like fleets. The bigger the better. Apart from the financial aspect we get as much pleasure from looking at the hundredth van as we do the first. My main reason though is that here I am responsible for all the layout and organisation but once that is done I can sit with my feet on the desk while my boys and girls scurry about getting the physical work done. That’s how life should be, and I would like to do that type of work exclusively.
