vehicle graphics: north hope fire dept.
Posted by Jill Marie Welsh on November 10, 2005 at 8:36 pmJust finished this today.
It’s a 1971 Ford brush truck, done as a restoration by a local fireman.
This is done in SignGold vinyl, and outlined by hand with 1-Shot lettering enamel.
Here is the original mock-up and the finished door.

Nice looking job there Jill!
Is the signgold like normal vinyl or is it more like chrome vinyl / polyester.
Does it weed ok, and what’s it like to apply?
Just being nosey….
Cheers

SignGold is very pricey, but a $99 2-yard starter kit will do 2 vehicle doors, and you get a cool CD and a bonus VectorArt Cd with it.
You also get a pricing guide and a color/texture chart for your shop.
It really is real gold. You must have a VERY sharp new blade.
It requires more weight/pressure than regular vinyl.
It cuts and weeds like butter, not like horrid chrome vinyl.
It comes on a plastic backer, this can be tricky to pull off.
The mfg’s sugest to apply dry, but I use RapidTac.

Turned out great Jill!
I’m sure the pics don’t do it justice with the gold on there.Stevo

Nice work Jill
How on earth did you get access to the front to do all that outlining? -
Nice Job Jill. People will not pay the price for signgold here. although some years ago I did do a huge name name down the side of a multi million dollar yacht, and price was no object.
Curious why you outlined in 1 shot tho. I thought a black keyline in tape would have been quicker, or was it down to costs?
Just curious.

Think I might have taken the same approach as Jill
There’s that elegance in the hand outlining you don’t get with with vinyl
I think it just adds to the prestigious look of the gold leaf -
John, you would have laughed if you saw me trying to outline the front.
Luckily the bumper was two feet deep, enough to kneel/crouch upon.
My chest kept getting in the way, and at one point I was bent over like an upside-down L, lettering bass-ackward.
Of course there were two local yokels in that shop (not mine)
asking all the typical crap.
And the lighting was awful, so I had to take off my glasses to see,
lucky I didn’t smear the wet paint with my nose!Shane, I opted to outline with paint to give it that “hand-done” look,
and you’re right, it is cheaper for me, I used maybe a tablespoon of paint on the whole truck.I charged the guy $300, it took me an hour to stick the SignGold and 2 hours to outline, with $99 in materials. I know I shoulda charged more, but he is an associate.
Thanks for the comments.

You traditional sign guys and gals always stick together 😕
I sorta knew the answer anyway John… honest…. 🙄

Hope they appreciated the favour Jill. 3 hours on application, plus the cutting, weeding and travel, they got a bargain 😮

Wow Jill NICE work!
I bet that signgold just looks Mahvalous on the red truck
I’m so impressed with people who will take actual paint and apply it to someone’s vehicle (well cause lets face it, I’ve nooo idea the mess I would make in my hands 😮 )
John has done a bit of “masked” pin striping, but wooo freehand like you—no way! What a great talent
Really nice Jill 😀 -
Good one Jilly. Apart from your ace work you seem to be able to get people to buy Signgold! Well done. What do you do, flutter your eyelashes at them? I’ve offered it to them before (the Signgold that is!) but no takers.

It takes a delicate sales method, Andy.
With fire stations, it’s a given, if one station has it, the other one has to as well.
But this was a private individual, not a fire company.
All you have to do is talk about the prestige of real gold….that kinda whets their appetite.
Usually the more redneck a person is, the “fancier” they want their ride.
(This guy was not like that tho, he wanted gold, because the original lettering on this truck was…hand-lettered REAL gold leaf…but he opted for SignGold because he felt it would hold up better)
One good way to upsell to SignGold is to put some on your own vehicle so that folks can see it up close and personal.

I have tried to sell signgold, but can’t convince anyone of its value.
If I put some on my van, and the toerags round our way found out it was real gold, it would be scratched off and down the pawn shop within hours,!!Peter
