Looks soooo easy but it’s a very tricky undergound: polyethylene. I used a special 3M Scotchcal for this and had to rubb each letter very hard.Shane Drew replied 18 years, 11 months ago 5 Members · 7 Replies -

Hi sign boy, I have also used the “special” and expensive 3m on similar projects, if the substrata is polypropolene, you may have problems.

can i use my “signboy” as the picture or do u need a real one?

I tried thinners, acetone, and ipa, Acetone works, and the vynil sticks, but not for long, These types of plastics (anything with poly) have silicones that rise to the surface, Its a bit like human skin, The top bit keeps falling off, so its very hard to stick something to it long term.

PeterPeter, you can get products made especially for poly products (plastic garbage bins etc). Must confess, I thought Oracal made one, but not really sure. Bought some stuff last year from my Oracal distributor, but that is not to say it is an oracal product I suppose.
The real problem is if the surface is not smooth. A lot of this style of thing has a dimpled surface, meaning a low surface tension. It is the primary reason for any product to fail on this style of thing.
These products are a bit like the Banner vinyls that rely on the migration of plasticizers to make the glue stronger. The tapes for poly surfaces use similar rule of thumb
I am babbling again, must be time to go to bed :lol1:
