  • Vehicle grade chrome vinyl (not wrapping vinyl)

Posted by John Dorling on August 4, 2014 at 10:44 am

I am looking for a mirror chrome vinyl for some cut vinyl on a vehicle. There are no recesses or anything I just want to make sure it lasts. Does anyone have a recommendation of a vinyl that they know lasts well as I have used some before where the silver stuff comes off the base and I don’t want a repeat of that!

    Thanks

    John

    Hi John

PaperlinX (R Horne) supply an R-Tape Smooth Silver Outdoor chrome ref: CD3101
which I have used on vehicles. Like most of this type of material it needs careful
    cutting and weeding!

    Cheers

    Chris

We’ve used some Ritrama I think it was on a fleet of buses with no issues. Also the Avery is quite good if a little thin and will bend a little round curves. Main thing is to make sure it’s got the solvent adhesive. Some of them have water based for interior use.

all chrome vinyls are we know it are not actually vinyl. its a polyester foil type film. which prevents it stretching. this film is strictly short term and isn’t actually for vehicles.

    however…
over the years i have found that if you mount the chrome foil onto another vinyl layer it helps extends the adhesion life. but the gold/coloured faces of the foil does deteriorate to a degree, particularly colours as they will fade to chrome.

when i say multi layers, i mean like a letter with an outline, so you lay down white, then the chrome letter on top creating the white outline. you can also do it with shadows and the like.
that said, i have really only seen this work on shop front signs, one in particular was less than a mile from us so i saw it every day for years on end. i would imagine vehicles to be very different due to wear and tear from pressure washers and the like.

thats all based on your budget type foil media we are all familiar with.
you can now buy chrome cast, which is often used for wrapping with, even though it is not a wrapping film.
this is meant for car detailing and the like, but i have used it several times now on large chrome cut vinyl graphics on vehicles without any problems.
that said, this film does come with air escape adhesive system on the rear so how long it lasts only time will tell. but saw one the other day and still looks perfect after 6 months or more.
