Learn to make your own ! Seriously, if you cant produce a vector yourself, and cant find one on one of the above sites ( which are very good, but often the logos arent correct or need extra work when you download them ) what would you do then ?

Downloading ones is fine to save time if you can find the one you need, but if a customer comes to you and needs their own logo converting from a letterhead or business card, or something obscure, you dont want to be turning away business because you cant do it.

Vectorising is really one of the key skills in sign making, in the same way that learning paint techniques used to be in the ‘old days’ – as most design work now will involve vectors on a PC, you’ll really put yourself at a disadvantage if you dont learn to do it.

Which software do you recommend for vectoring Mike?

Corel X3 has a good inbuilt autotrace function – if you have a decent JPEG ( 600 dpi or above ) then you can sometimes get a fairly good vector that doesnt need too much tidying.

For creating vectors from scratch I use Draw, but mainly just because thats what I learned to use from the beginning, so have got used to how to do it on that and can make them up pretty quickly.

All vectors are the same though – all they are is a collection of straight and curved lines joined together, once you get the hang of doing that then you can make any design.

have to agree with that Mike, i’d say 99% of my work involves drawing stuff from scratch, i’d be lost without the ability to do it. i haven’t ugraded to X3 or even X4 yet, so have yet to see the new autotrace, but even traces usually need work to remove unwanted stuff and edited to finish them.
