I buy quite a few things from the states, and am not sure how things work in the UK, but here we pay duty of between 2-8% depending on what it is and then the vat (25%) on top.

I recently imported a 30ft helium Zeppelin (Blimp) and paid about 2% duty, do you have a website in the UK for customs and excise where they list rates of duty from different countries?

Otherwise give them a call tomorrow and see what they say.

    Yup.

You’ll pay import duty AND VAT on the total.

But you don’t pay the American sales tax.

We bought some jeans from America,
They were around £70.00 a pair over here we paid around £35.00 a pair over there.
with delivery, duty and all the rest they ended up costing £7.00 a pair more and we had to wait 3 weeks to get them……

Thanks for your advise everyone. For information, I spoke to Customs & Excise today – I have to take the purchase price, add on shipping cost, add on 2.2% import tax and finally add 17.5% VAT on top of the lot. Believe it or not, we are still saving around £100 over buying a machine in the UK. Just hope it’s worth it all!!

How much is the equipment you are buying? £100 doesn’t sound a great deal for the hassle!

Started off at £215 – now ending up about £450. But as I said we ar still saving £100.

I bought a CD from the US the other day, cost $100. then cost me £22 in tax.

Make sure the machine is ok to run on our voltage.

Quick point make sure equipment is supplied @ 250v or is at leastdual voltage if you don’t want the hassle of running transformers. i have shipped small bits and pieces in before (bulk ink system for dye sub epson c80 not avaliable in this country with no probs) carrier will charge for collection of import duty etc.

    Best of luck

As Becky said think about the voltage, you don’t say what type of machine you are buying. If its something that requires servicing or backup, how will you be treated by the UK distributor/supplier?

I think if I bought my Gerber bits and pieces direct from a US dealer, the Spandex people here in Sweden would kindly tell me to take my problems back to where I bought it from.

Maybe you don’t need spares or service/backup help in which case it may be worth the saving?? Just think that’s worth a thought.
