Van Signage – how would you do this?
Hi Everyone,
Would really appreciate some advice on how you would apply the attached. Ultimately it’s 3 large, interlinking boxes, outline only, then with the text overlayed.
Problem 1 – I’m anxious mostly about the boxes, before when I applied a large hollow square it was a nightmare to keep it "square" and in place, and in the end had to cut one side of the box and adjust by eye. Now I’ve got 3. Would you cut all three as a single graphic or would you overly them seperately onto each other, or would that look rubbish?
2 – In a similar vain, would the text overlaying the boxes look over simply stuck over the top, or would it better to cut away the box material underneath, leaving a few mil either side of the text?
Any thoughts would be very much appreciated.

I would weld all the boxes together and apply as a single graphic, I have a 1200mm wide plotter so could cut that in 1 piece. If you only have a 600mm wide plotter I’d cut the graphic in 2 pieces and trim to the recess part of the panel.
I would knock out the grey box graphic a few mil either side of the lettering as this will make for a much neater finish and won’t pose any colour contrast issues.

How would you recommend applying as a single piece, use paper or plastic application paper? Wet or dry?

I only ever use paper appli tape and I’d do that dry, hinge in the centre and work out from there.

Thanks Neil, same here with paper AP and applying dry, but been wondering recently if I’ve been making life unnecessarily hard on myself!

You could leave the middle section in place and weed it once you’ve applied it?
Personally I would do the same as Neil but leaving the middle section in place will help when applying and it will be easy enough to weed being such a large box.

Good shout Dan, I was thinking of that but was second guessing myself as to whether the extra material would become a hindrance as much as a benefit…. if you did this, would you go wet or dry application?

Dry all day long especially due to the location of the bar where the door will slide along.

I would second Neil on the outline.
Paper application tape and keep it tight.
Do the half and half technique with some tape and magnets. Keep the application tape tight though, not don’t stretch it. Work with the squeegee horizontal. It all comes down to squeegee technique.You could try keeping the squares in. Then weed out on the van. We do this with frosted glass. Helps a lot. Might not help at all in this situation though. I have never tried.

always dry and always with paper application tape!
Leaving the centre section until applied will help if you struggle with tight and slack surface tension of the tape. just weed it out after.I hate the plastic application tape, it kinda feels like your dragging your suitcase along one of those walking conveyor belts in the airport… frrrrrrrRRRR…frrrrrrRRRR…frrrrrrrRRRR…. jist sayin! :awkward:
