Using Magnetics For The First Time
Posted by Paul Humble on January 12, 2009 at 9:33 pmA Taxi company has asked me to quote for some small magnetic signs for the car doors. I feel a bit stupid asking this but how do you cut the sheeting? Does it have to be done by hand or is it run through a plotter?
If you dont ask you dont learn I suppose :lol1:

Cut by hand Paul, use a stanley knife and a straight edge, or good scissors for shapes, if you have to do large quantities a corner rounder die is worthwhile, otherwise cut your vinyl to shape and use as a template.
No such thing as a stupid question, stupid answers are quite common though!
Good luck quoting though, taxi firms come second to estate agents for being tight

Ive got a 20% share in this one though lol 😉 So im guaranteed the work lol.
Cheers for the help Peter, I thought it couldnt just be a case of running it through a cutter. The shapes they want are just rectangular so it wont be a big issue to hand cut them.

I was told by the metamark rep that you could cut magnetic material with a vinyl cutter. Tried it with our graphtec fc7000 and seems to jam up as the magnetic sheet is attracted to the metal housing of the machine.
But I would rather cut using a knife takes a lot less time, by the time you set your pressure, change the height of the blade, load the magnetic into the cutter…. you get the point.

Make sure your blade is really sharp as otherwise it will have a tendency to wander. With a sharp blade a light score is sufficient followed by another then all you need to do is fold it over and there you have it. YouA sharp blade makes it so much easier.

I would recommend clamping your straight edge or putting some folded up masking tape underneath as magnetic stuff is really slippery.

I found a heavier knife (not a scalpel/xacto) and a fresh blade along side a clamped down straight edge works the best

Very important – print out customer care instructions for the magnetics and make sure you give them out with every set. Magnetics should be removed VERY frequently and generally require some care to avoid come backs.

Cheers for the replies guys, I had read some of the horror stories regarding mags sticking so I was going to make up some kind of form to say the customer fully understands the importance of regularly removing them and cleaning the area and get them to sign it.

Paul , when we buy our magnetic it usually comes with a do and don’t care sheet, I just copy and give to the customer and tell them very firmly to follow it carefully.
