  • Using knife on car paint

    Hello everyone.

    I’ve got quick question.
All roofs what I wrapped in carbon fibre had the plastic trims on the sides so I could remove them and put vinyl underneath but I’ve got one car for weekend which hasn’t got any – it’s just little recess so I have to cut it on the paint.

    Question is:
Do you use any particular masking tape?

Any different solutions? I know I should be able to use optimized pressure but it’s gonna be 3M carbon which is quite thick.

Jag sign supplies do a tape that is made for the job
but although I have used it often with normal vinyl, you would need to take care with di-noc There are thinner carbons around though, which are as good as 3m

    Metamark mm-cf4 cast is one,

i think hexis do their own trimming tape…
but try any narrow, "low tack" tape on a roll. something like the red tape you get for heat presses.
run that down the paintwork where your going to trim.
apply the vinyl over it as normal. you will then see an embossed area where the tape is.
trim down the line you want to trim, but using a new sharp scalpel.
being careful with pressure. any "over doing it" will/should just cut into the line of tape you have below.
once the vinyl is trimmed. you should be able to pull the thin line of tape below the vinyl out from the side leaving you to smooth down firmly without having cut on the paint work.

    hope that makes sense? 😀

Sorry, the tape I mentioned was from Hexis not Jag.
Just to add to what Rob has said, they do it in 2 widths
    I think 4mm and 2mm
so if you lay the thinner one over the thicker, it gives you an edge to run your scalpel against,

    That’s what I thought.
Yes Robbie that make a lot of sense. I was going to buy that hexis one but I’m gonna try some different tape tomorrow.

I know it’s lot of CF vinyls on the market but I and my customers really likes the 3M. Sometimes I need to use Oracal because it’s coming in 1520 wide which is perfect for most bonnets – looks like the hexis one but better because the structure is straight like 3M ones

    Thanks guys.

I have used the Hexis 4mm tape underneath Carbon vinyl when trimming a panel and it works very well! Think it was only about 6 quid a roll!

I’ve bought 3M fine line tape in local paint shop. cost me about £11 for 6 and 3mm. It works fine. I was struggle a bit to put in nice straight line on the roof but finally manage to do it.

    Thanks for all replies

Guys, just read through this thread, very helpful as I didn’t want to use masking tape!!

I have to do the central section of a Range Rover bonnet, no way I was going to trust my skills at scalpel weight down the centre line of a bonnet!

    😀

3M fine line tape for me too.

It’s more of a plastic than a paper masking tape.

3M fine line tape here too, works a treat and really easy to shape to any necessary curves etc.

Will be using it today on BMW roof. 🙂
