We have had an existing customer order a load of vinyl letters.
it consists of 6 words all 4 inch high. The total vinyl usage is 30m. If I charge at our normal rate ie. per letter it comes out at over a thousand pounds. If I charge at vinyl usage rate it comes out at around six hundred. They both seem to be expensive. The font is helvetica so not hard to weed.
Which of the prices seem more realistic or am I way over the top with both?

    Many thanks

try cutting one, weeding it and then taping and trimming it. See how much time it takes.

I know you can cut/weed/tape/trim aload at once. but it might give you an idea on how long it`ll take to complete the job.

I once fell foul over a similar order. The vinyl used was pennies, it was the time it took, that was the biggest cost.

I know sometimes simple ‘backed’ cut vinyl is sold out at £15 a cut metre or so (at 610mmwide that is) which would make your order abour £450 worth? If you can do it all in a day and the thirty metres of vinyl and tape is gunna cost ya, say, £50 then are you happy to earn £400 for the day?

As becky says it’s all about timing and what you personally are gunna get out of it? Do the math (as our american colleagues say) and just be happy with your bit. If you’re unsure about how long it will take then simply cut one ‘pass’ of vinyl and time it all…also, when you cost it to the customer make sure you work out the value per phrase and sell it on that basis… 😉

Mike`s suggestion of £15 per cut metre is a good method. It also has some drawbacks, particularly if that 1 metre for £15.00 is filled with 1 inch high lettering and takes an hour and a half to weed :).

I`ll let you work out your own method as to how you “balance” that but i charge £40.00 for the first metre and £15.00 thereafter. I find the £40.00 helps cover the time you need to weed small, fiddly, lettering.

Thanks everbody for your input. I will now go away and work it out. I like the idea of charging per metre. It keeps everything simple and with a dislex…dislsc…calculator that makes mistakes it reduces errors 😆

if a 4 inch letter is say £1 each.. for a large amount give him something like 25% discount and stick to it. thats what we do anyway… 🙄

Keith, where else are they going to get this from? Check out the price people like seaton, arco, viking direct etc charge for what they call pre-spaced lettering, you might get a shock and start thinking your price is pretty good.
